The Tekken 8 Exodus Continues As 20-Year Veteran Exits Bandai

Kohei Ikeda, the producer and director behind recent entries in the Tekken fighting game franchise, announced on Monday that his role as Tekken 8’s game director “is coming to a close,” and that he’s “officially left” Bandai Namco after 20 years with the company.

Ikeda’s statement was published on X in the early hours of June 1, and comes less than six months after Tekken’s long-serving producer and project director, Katsuhiro Harada, announced his departure from Bandai Namco on December 8, 2025.

Announcement:
After 20 incredible years, I have left Bandai Namco Studios.
Thank you all for your support.

“I am deeply proud that I had the opportunity to create games alongside such incredible people who poured their hearts into this work,” Ikeda stated in his post on X. “While my role leading the team as Game Director is coming to a close, the values that both I personally and the Tekken Project have always cherished–staying close to the fans and the community and building the game together with everyone–will never change[…] As I look forward to the future of Tekken and the [fighting game community], I will also continue taking on new challenges as a game developer.”

Ikeda’s statement has left the Tekken community feeling somewhat uncertain about the future of Tekken 8, and whichever entry comes after, mostly due to the fact that Bandai Namco has yet to announce who will be taking over for him as the head of the game. Likewise, the short length of time between Harada’s departure and Ikeda’s announcement isn’t exactly filling the community with confidence.

We have dumbass suits running the company that don’t spare a second thought to their fanbase. Harada aired his frustrations in the SoulCalibur post from like 1-2 years ago.

It also probably doesn’t help that Michael Murray, the beloved Tekken producer and localization lead, has yet to make an official statement about Ikeda’s departure. Given his well-publicized friendship with both Ikeda and Harada, some are already wondering if he might be planning to follow in their footsteps.

Ikeda also didn’t state in his announcement whether he’s moving over to a new studio, as he merely alluded to “taking on new challenges as a game developer.” Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear that Ikeda is joining his ex-colleague Harada at SNK’s newly formed VS Studio in the next few weeks.
