Today Is the End of an Era for Destiny 2

Today, June 9, 2026, officially marks the end of ongoing live-service support for Destiny 2. After receiving continuous updates for nearly 9 years, Sony has made the decision to shut down active development of Destiny 2 after its final update goes live, though the game will remain playable in maintenance mode for the foreseeable future. For the game’s most loyal fans, this is undoubtedly a devastating blow, as even many of those who have had a complicated relationship with it have admitted that a world without it is a difficult reality to accept.

Even so, Bungie seems to be doing everything in its power to ensure Destiny 2 goes out with a bang. Monument of Triumph, the game’s final defining patch, looks like one of the most substantial updates it has ever received, with a host of new content and quality-of-life improvements that players have been requesting for years. Once it goes live on the hour of Destiny 2‘s weekly reset, players will likely have plenty to keep them busy, but for many fans, it’s still not enough. The general sentiment surrounding the game seems to be that it would be far better if it never needed Monument of Triumph to begin with.

Destiny 2’s Live-Service Support Era Has Reached Its End

Destiny 2 launched on September 6, 2017, and at the time, it felt like the franchise was finally getting the fresh start it needed. The first Destiny had become a much better game by the end of its life, but it also took a long time to get there. Destiny 2 was supposed to be Bungie taking everything it had learned from those first three years and building a sequel that could move the series forward in a much more fulfilling and accessible way.

However, that didn’t exactly happen, at least not right away. Destiny 2 had a stronger campaign and a smoother launch than the first game, but once players reached the endgame, a lot of the flaws started to show. The loot grind dried up too quickly, and because of that, the game didn’t give players a good reason to keep coming back. Destiny 2‘s Forsaken expansion eventually changed that, giving the game one of its best campaigns and the kind of content that got players feeling excited about its future again. Beyond Light later became another major turning point, ushering in a darker era that brought Destiny 2 closer to the story it would eventually be remembered for.

But now, all the work, all the time and energy spent on Destiny 2 to turn it into what is widely considered one of the best live-service games ever made, has led the franchise to a dark, empty future, with no Destiny 3 in sight and little reason to keep playing beyond what Monument of Triumph adds to the game. To be clear, it isn’t being taken offline, and Bungie has confirmed the game will remain playable after active development concludes. However, Monument of Triumph is still the final live-service content update for Destiny 2, which means the version of the game players have known for almost nine years is ending. After today, Destiny 2 may still be there, but it will no longer be moving forward in the same way.

Destiny 2’s Monument of Triumph Update Is One Last Reason to Come Back

At the very least, Monument of Triumph gives Destiny 2 one last big moment before that future arrives. Bungie has intentionally framed the update as a celebration of everything Guardians have accomplished during the game’s active development. Monument of Triumph is available to all players, brings back and refreshes several parts of the game, and is meant to leave Destiny 2 in a better place for anyone who wants to return after active development ends. Obviously, that doesn’t completely soften the blow, but it does give players one final reason to log in and spend time in a game that has meant so much to so many people.

Though it hasn’t always thrived, Destiny 2 has survived by giving players something else to look forward to. Even during its worst stretches, there was usually another expansion, another raid, another season, or another major change somewhere ahead of it. However, with Monument of Triumph, that changes. Players can still log in after June 9, 2026, but they will be logging into a game that no longer has anything new waiting for them beyond the final update. Once a game that spent nearly a decade asking players to keep coming back, Destiny 2 has finally reached the end of the road.
