Despite the original HBO series ending in 2019, Game of Thrones remains one of the world’s biggest fantasy franchises thanks to the continued success of House of the Dragon and several other projects in development, but another big release for the IP has been delayed to 2027. The good news is that this delay can only mean a better final product, although this does not always mean much to Game of Thrones fans.
The HBO series may have ended, and House of the Dragon may be ongoing, and this new project will now be released in 2027, but there’s no end in sight for the wait for Winds of Winter’s release. George R.R. Martin’s Westeros has essentially taken on a life of its own at this point, with the penultimate book in the series having been in the works since 2011. If the “Curse of his life,” as Martin describes, does eventually release, it’s not planned to bring the series to an end—the theoretical next novel, A Dream of Spring, is destined to do that.
Game of Thrones Fans Have to Wait a Little Longer for War for Westeros
In an official development update, PlaySide Studios has confirmed that Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has been delayed out of 2026 and into early 2027. A little longer of a wait will give the upcoming real-time strategy game time for extra polish. The good news, though, is that PlaySide released a little look at units and maps in War for Westeros. For those unfamiliar, it’s essentially a Game of Thrones version of Total War.

PlaySide showed House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and even the Night King’s Army of the Dead as all playable characters, featuring a plethora of heroes to level up, unlock abilities, and influence the battlefield. And of course, Jon Snow returns in Game of Thrones: War for Westeros as a playable hero and one of the most iconic in the franchise.
The latest update also offered a closer look at several battlefields inspired by Westeros, including King’s Landing, The Wall, and Ashemark, a location tied to Robb Stark’s campaign through the Westerlands during the War of the Five Kings. Each map is being designed with its own strategic layout, encouraging players to decide when to push forward, hold defensive positions, flank opponents, and control key areas of the battlefield. The developers added that they’ll reveal more about map control and gameplay systems later this year, which also means more news on the upcoming game is inbound.

While the move to early 2027 means fans will have to wait a little longer, the update offers the clearest look yet at what War for Westeros is aiming to deliver. In the meantime, House of the Dragon season 3 continues to air on HBO Max, and fans don’t have much longer until the finale either. House of the Dragon‘s Season 3 finale lands August 9, 2026, and perhaps fans can expect to see War for Westeros at Gamescom just some time later.
