Tomb Raider Catalyst Delay Means No Disc Version On PlayStation

Tomb Raider: Catalyst was revealed back at last year’s Game Awards with a teaser that ended with a 2027 release date. The long-awaited 12th entry in the action-adventure series will no longer be making that date, an Amazon gaming executive recently confirmed. The fresh delay means the first new Tomb Raider game in years will also be the first ever to arrive on PlayStation without a disc version.

“We’ve announced the two Tomb Raider titles,” Jeffrey Gattis, Amazon’s general manager of gaming, said on this week’s The Game Business Show. “Atlantis comes February 12th of next year and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one. So we’re excited about those. There are some other, you know, AAA things that are in various stages of discussion right now.”

Gattis was speaking about Amazon Luna, the company’s game streaming service, and how its various projects, ranging from small mobile party games to AAA blockbusters like Tomb Raider, will fit into it. He only joined the company last year ahead of its retreat from premium gaming, including the reported cancellation of a Lord of the Rings MMO.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, an Unreal Engine 5 remake of the first game in the series, was originally set to come out this year, but slipped to early 2027. It’s unclear how much of that delay had to do with a busy release calendar in the second half of 2026 thanks to games getting out of Grand Theft Auto VI‘s way in the fall, or because it simply needs a bunch of extra polish.

While it would make sense to not release two Tomb Raider games in the same year, there have also been ongoing rumblings of development challenges on Tomb Raider Catalyst, especially as Crystal Dynamics continues facing fresh waves of layoffs. But not coming out until 2028 also means Catalyst is the first confirmed PlayStation release to not be shipping with a disc version for PS5.

“Physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,” Sony announced earlier this month. “Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”

That statement doesn’t leave any wiggle room for games that were supposed to be coming out before the deadline but have now been delayed to still get physical copies, though it’s always possible Sony could change its mind. While analysts think that’s very unlikely and are predicting the PS6 will be an all-digital device, there’s nothing stopping Sony from continuing to print PS5 discs.

If this console generation is any indication, games will be coming to the current console for many years still to come.
