Few anime have left the kind of mark that Steins;Gate has, building a ton of hype for its upcoming return. More than a decade after it first aired, the time-travel thriller is still regularly mentioned alongside the greatest anime ever made, thanks in part to its unforgettable cast, emotional twists, and one of the genre’s strongest endings. For many fans, Rintaro Okabe, Kurisu Makise, and the Future Gadget Laboratory remain just as iconic today as they were when the series first exploded in popularity.
Part of what has kept Steins;Gate alive for so long is how well its story has aged. The series blends science fiction, conspiracy, and surprisingly grounded character writing into something that still feels unique—even if time travel anime isn’t exactly. Whether fans discovered it through the anime or the original visual novel, Steins;Gate has continued to attract new audiences years after its debut.
Steins;Gate Re:Boot Has Two Key Release Dates (Depending on Platform)
Check Out Steins;Gate Re:Boot on Steam
Steins;Gate Re:Boot launches August 19 on Steam and Xbox Series X/S, plus it comes to PS5, Switch, and Switch 2 on October 29, bringing the legendary visual novel game back with fully remastered visuals, a redesigned user interface, and an all-new story scenario that expands the world beyond the original release. The reboot also recreates Akihabara with updated visuals while refreshing character designs from original artist huke. It’s worth mentioning, for anyone confused about the Xbox version taking priority, that the original Steins;Gate visual novel was released in Japan for the Xbox 360 first and foremost, all the way back in 2009.

The core story remains familiar, following self-proclaimed mad scientist Rintaro Okabe after one of his inventions unexpectedly allows messages to be sent into the past. As timelines begin to shift and a larger conspiracy starts to unfold, players’ decisions determine how events play out through multiple branching paths and endings. Like the original, Steins; Gate Re:Boot remains a visual novel first and foremost, with choices made through Okabe’s phone changing the course of the time travel story.
Players who purchase Steins;Gate Re:Boot during its early purchase campaign will also receive Steins;Gate: Octet of Shifting Space at no additional cost once it launches. Originally released in 2011, the spin-off imagines what Steins;Gate would have looked like on a 1980s Japanese PC, complete with retro 8-bit visuals and modern keyboard support. It will also mark the first time its release has been available on Steam.
Steins;Gate has never really disappeared, of course, but August 19 marks one of the franchise’s biggest returns in years. Still, Steins;Gate Re:Boot looks positioned to introduce one of anime’s most celebrated stories to a new generation while giving longtime fans another reason to dive back into Akihabara. Whether it stands the landing or not remains to be seen, but fans of the franchise should definitely pay attention.
