3 PS Plus Games Just Got Major Upgrades on PS5

3 PS Plus Games Just Got Major Upgrades on PS5

Three older Far Cry games that are available on PlayStation Plus have received major performance updates on January 21. Their single biggest improvement arrives in the form of 60fps support for the PS5, making these PS Plus staples much smoother to play on Sony’s current-gen console.

Far Cry Primal has been available on PlayStation Plus via the Ubisoft+ Classics catalog since December 2022. Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon were offered on the service for even longer, having debuted as part of its day-one library in May 2022. All three have now received major performance upgrades.

Prince of Persia and 5 Other Games Canceled by Ubisoft, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Remake Delayed

Ubisoft cancels the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, despite expectations that it would release this year.

60fps Patches Now Available for Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon, and Primal

The updates officially rolled out in the early morning hours (ET) on January 21. They were preceded by a cryptic teaser that some fans correctly interpreted as alluding to select Far Cry games getting 60fps support on the PlayStation 5. The performance updates for Far Cry 3, FC3: Blood Dragon, and Far Cry Primal have also launched for the Xbox Series X/S. The three games previously ran at 30 frames per second, so the act of doubling their frame rate should deliver a much smoother experience overall.

New Update Also Fixes Far Cry Primal PS5 Crashes

While no official patch notes have been shared, at least one of the three games received additional improvements beyond 60fps support. According to several social media posts from Ubisoft reps, Far Cry Primal should no longer experience excessive crashes on the PlayStation 5 starting from version 1.04. The company has confirmed that the issue was specific to the PS5 backward compatibility layer, albeit without elaborating.

Ubisoft Is Still Considering Future Updates for Older Far Cry Games

The official @FarCryGame Twitter account has engaged in a variety of interactions with fans prompted by the January 21 update release. As part of one such exchange, one person asked for a New Game Plus mode to be added to Blood Dragon. A Ubisoft representative said the feature is not part of the developer’s agenda at the moment, but while noting they could add it to their list of fan suggestions for the team to “keep in mind” moving forward. Reading between the lines, the remark indicates that the newly debuted 60fps patch may not have been a one-off and that Ubisoft still considers some of its older Far Cry games as being actively supported.

In another social media exchange, a Ubisoft rep acknowledged one fan grievance about automatic weapons in the Classic Edition of Far Cry 3 all feeling the same way, saying they would bring it up with the developers. The complaint itself is years old and largely rooted in the fact that the remaster reuses more weapon sounds than the original game, making some guns feel less impactful as, e.g., the MBP .50 sounds the same as the AK-47 and the SG5533. While the chances of this getting addressed eight years following the game’s release may not seem high, the fact that Ubisoft has acknowledged the complaint at all suggests they are less than zero.

What’s Next for Far Cry

According to job listings reviewed by Game Rant, a new Far Cry game has been in the works at Ubisoft Toronto since at least 2023. The Canadian developer is now formally part of Vantage Studios, Ubisoft’s flagship game-making family resulting from its recent restructuring. The move saw the group split into five “Creative Houses,” with Vantage labeled as CH1, in charge of Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and Assassin’s Creed.

Assuming Far Cry 7—or the next installment, whatever its title—entered active production around 2023, it could be on track for a 2028 release, based on current AAA development timelines. However, that projection remains uncertain, particularly in light of Ubisoft’s recent restructuring, which resulted in delays across multiple major projects. In a January 21 statement, the company confirmed seven games have been postponed due to the reorganization, though it did not specify which titles.
