Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Movie Script Might Have Leaked

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Movie Script Might Have Leaked

The full script for Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil film, set to release on September 18 this year, has reportedly leaked online. Reactions to the contents of the script are proving to be somewhat mixed among fans online, with some Resident Evil fans criticising the overall plot for its lack of connection to the events of Capcom’s games.

The earliest report of the leaked script appeared on a 4chan thread sometime on March 6. Hearing the words “4chan” and “leak” together might, understandably, lead you to question the legitimacy of the script, but there are quite a few reasons this appears to be the real deal. Firstly, while the script itself is seemingly impossible to find now, those who managed to read it on Reddit, X, and ResetEra seem pretty convinced that it’s real.

More importantly, though, it appears that someone is trying very hard to scrub any links to the leaked script from the internet. The linked Google Drive in the r/LeaksAndRumours subreddit post has been manually deleted for violating their terms of service, and the 4chan thread this rumour originated in seems to have been erased. Also, this wouldn’t be the first time that the script for one of Zach Cregger’s films has leaked, as early drafts for both Barbarian and Weapons found their way online before release.

just read some of the resident evil movie script leak because i was too curious 🥲

what’s interesting is the many comments of people who read the whole script saying this feels like a bait and switch 😮‍💨

While finding the script is seemingly borderline impossible now (trust me, I spent a long time looking), reactions to it and summaries are very easy to find. If you really want to roll the dice on potentially spoiling it for yourself, this comment on ResetEra details the supposed beginning, middle, and end of the plot.

Spoiler warning: Don’t read ahead if you don’t want to know what’s potentially in the script and thus might be in the final movie!

According to those who read it, the story revolves around the main character, an organ courier named Bryan (played by Austin Abrams), and his attempt to reach his pregnant wife in Raccoon City. It’s a very comedy-heavy, slapstick sort of affair, with Bryan racing against time due to being infected with the t-virus, and getting into a bunch of silly zombie-related misfortunes along the way (including run-ins with zombie dogs, zombie toddlers, and an overweight, acid-spitting zombie).

Just be warned that your mileage may vary depending on how much of a hardcore Resident Evil fan you are. Personally, it sounds like exactly what I expected: a kooky Zach Cregger horror comedy with a very loose connection to the Resident Evil universe. Sounds fun to me, but it may give some fans painful memories of Paul W. S. Anderson’s series of Resident Evil adaptations. For anyone looking for an HBO prestige TV-like treatment of the Capcom horror series, you might have to keep waiting.
