Pokemon Fan Creates New Designs for Bulbasaur and Its Evolutions

Pokemon Fan Creates New Designs for Bulbasaur and Its Evolutions

A Pokemon fan artist shared their reinterpretations of the Kanto starter trio, such as Bulbasaur and its evolved forms, on social media for all to see. The Pokemon fan artist stated that their versions of the Kanto starter trio were part of an effort to keep drawing art each day.

Known as the Seed Pokemon, Bulbasaur is the Grass-type starter of Pokemon Red and Blue. Bulbasaur is listed as the first Pokemon of the original Pokedex. As a Grass and Poison Pokemon, Bulbasaur is one of the first dual-type critters that young Pokemon trainers can catch. As Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur and Venusaur, the bulb on its back blossoms into a pink flower capable of storing and unleashing solar energy. With high defenses and a decent move pool to draw from, Venusaur is considered the strongest Grass-type Pokemon native to the Kanto region.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game shares more details about its special 30th anniversary set, confirming the expansion’s release date.

Pokemon Fan Shares Amazing Reinterpretations of Bulbasaur and Other Kanto Starters

Although Bulbasaur and its evolved forms have received some fan-made alterations before, one Pokemon artist gave the Seed Pokemon a new look based on the creature its design was originally inspired by. On the Pokemon subreddit, a Reddit user named NehGon shared their drawings of Bulbasaur and the other Kanto starters. For the Bulbasaur line, NehGon focused on the toad-like appearances that Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Venusaur have. The redesigned Bulbasaur has a bullfrog body, with a cream-colored belly and a tiny bulb on its back. Upon evolving into Ivysaur, its green leaves gain a pink coating on the edges, similar to poison ivy foliage. As for Venusaur, the fully-evolved Seed Pokemon has some wards adorning its body, along with a blooming corpse lily plant atop its back.

Alongside the drawings of the Bulbasaur line, NehGon shared their interpretations of the Charmander and Squirtle lines as part of a daily art drawing regimen. NehGon’s interpretation of Charmander leaned into the Flame Pokemon’s lizard-like design, as it has a thicker tail and wider eyes than its official design. For Charmeleon, the fin atop its head is dinosaur-inspired. NehGon’s Charizard design kept the same color palette as the official Pokemon artwork, though it has a more slender body and shorter arms compared to The Pokemon Company’s design. Additionally, NehGon’s interpretation of Squirtle has a bigger tail than the official artwork. As for Wartortle and Blastoise, NehGon drew rugged designs of the Turtle Pokemon. NehGoh’s Wartortle has red eyes, along with a chipped shell covered in spikes. Blastoise’s iconic water cannons are made of coral rather than metal, and various coral patterns adorn its arms and shoulders.

Fan Interest in Kanto Pokemon Has Grown For One Reason

NehGon’s artistic redesigns of the Kanto starters came just over a month after Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen were relaunched on Nintendo Switch consoles. As the first remakes of the Pokemon mainline game series, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen combined the Kanto region with Gen 3 game mechanics, such as Pokemon abilities and natures. With the games being released to new audiences on Nintendo Switch, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players are rediscovering tricks that have been in the games for over two decades.

The return of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen will also help to tide players over until Pokemon Winds and Waves launches on Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2027. Although some returning Pokemon will appear in Pokemon Winds and Waves, time will tell if the Gen 10 roster will include the Kanto starter trio.
