Astarion is officially returning as the central character in a brand-new Baldur’s Gate 3 release. The vampire companion from Baldur’s Gate 3 is a natural candidate for more content, making him a great choice for this new release.
Upon Baldur’s Gate 3‘s release in 2023, Astarion was an enormous hit with fans. His tortured backstory and incredible character arc made him one of the most popular Baldur’s Gate 3 companions, rewarding players who took the time to trust him and explore his narrative thanks to an award-winning performance by Neil Newbon. Since then, his popularity with fans has only continued to grow.
New Baldur’s Gate 3 Astarion Comic Announced By Dark Horse
In a post on X, Dark Horse Comics confirmed that a “bloody new comic series” is on the way, featuring Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Astarion. The only artwork is very on-brand for Astarion, showing the vampire companion licking blood from a dagger. The featured art is by illustrator Gerald Parel, and Dark Horse Comics says fans can expect a full announcement with even more details at New York Comic Con on October 9.
Astarion will be the second Baldur’s Gate comic from Dark Horse Comics. Earlier this year, the company announced a BG3 Karlach comic, which also has yet to be released. There is no news on when fans can expect more about the Karlach comic, and it’ll be interesting to see whether the two are related in any way.
Because of Astarion’s popularity, he’s already appeared in a few pieces of media post-Baldur’s Gate 3 release. The biggest by far is Baldur’s Gate 3: Astarion, a novel by author T. Kingfisher. However, the Astarion novel has proven controversial among fans for changing some elements of his backstory.
With Larian moving on to Divinity, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Baldur’s Gate in the video game space. Following up Baldur’s Gate 3 is a very difficult ask, which is why some developers have already turned down the opportunity to make a sequel. Whenever a new game does come to fruition, the question will be whether the very popular cast of BG3 makes a return.
