Bethesda Issues Official Statement on The Elder Scrolls Amid Shutdown Rumors

Bethesda has provided fans with an official update on the future of The Elder Scrolls franchise following significant layoffs at ZeniMax Online Studios. The Elder Scrolls Online developer reiterated its commitment to supporting the franchise’s MMORPG with future updates and a roadmap of what to expect from the game in the coming months. Despite fears that The Elder Scrolls Online may be shutdown after the studio’s restructuring, this newly provided statement should serve to ease any fan worries.

As part of Xbox’s recent restructuring, Bethesda and its studios like id Software and ZeniMax Online were among the developers affected by layoffs. The result left fans unsure about the future of The Elder Scrolls Online, especially since the game has been running for over 12 years now. However, ESO still appears to have a full head of steam with development continuing on updates for the foreseeable future.

New Official Bethesda Release Confirmed for August 11

Fans of Bethesda games should mark their calendars, as a new release from the company is set to launch in the very near future.

In a blog post on The Elder Scrolls Online‘s official website, game director Nick Giacomini provided an update on the game’s future, including what to expect from the rest of 2026. First, Giacomini assures fans that support for ESO will continue following nearly 400 layoffs at ZeniMax and ZeniMax Online. This is great news for fans who were worried that these layoffs would spell the end of ESO, though some of the developer’s plans are being shifted around as a result of this staff restructuring.

“At the same time, we’ve seen a lot of questions about what these changes mean for ESO. So let me be clear: ESO is here to stay, and our team is dedicated to the future of this game.”

Updated Roadmap for The Elder Scrolls Online in 2026

Along with assurance that The Elder Scrolls Online will continue to be supported with new content going forward, Giacomini also provided an updated roadmap for the game that accounts for the personnel changes amid the studio’s restructuring. Upcoming features like the Crimson Veldt trial, update 52, and ESO‘s Class and Combat refresh have been pushed to early 2027 in order to give the team more time to ensure these complex changes are handled right. However, there is still plenty of new ESO content planned for the rest of 2026.

While The Elder Scrolls Online Season 1 is currently ongoing with the Thieves Guild and Sheogorath quests, more is planned for update 51 on September 28, including The Nowhere Vault, the new Rumors game system, and a series of quality-of-life improvements. Season 2 for The Elder Scrolls Online is set to launch on October 21, with new additions such as:

  • Solo Dungeons: Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices.
  • The Greymoor Chapter and Markarth DLC will become free for all players on November 9, 2026.
  • New Golden Pursuit to highlight Skyrim and the (now available to everyone) Antiquities system from November 9 to December 2.
  • Improvements to the Tamriel Tome, including expanded Challenges for broader playstyles, higher Tome Point rollover cap, and more
  • Frost Atronach crate rewards will be available in the Gold Coast Bazaar.
  • Witches Festival and the New Life Festival events will return as usual

Even with The Elder Scrolls 6‘s timeline reportedly affected by the Xbox layoffs, The Elder Scrolls Online looks like it will continue to provide series fans with tons of Elder Scrolls content in the meantime. And with the studio’s commitment to supporting ESO for the foreseeable future, and the success of the Seasonal model, ESO updates should continue to roll out at a steady pace.
