Fans of Bloodborne and 2025 Game of the Year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, have a new game to check out next month. Lord of Mysteries is a free-to-play MMORPG from developer SPARK NEXA based on the popular Chinese web novel of the same name. Those craving more of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s mix of fantasy and Belle Epoque setting will enjoy the Victorian England aesthetic of Lord of Mysteries.
Originally serialized between 2018 and 2020, Lord of Mysteries is a web novel series that follows protagonist Zhou Mingrui who finds himself transmigrated into the body of Klein Moretti, a university graduate in a world that bears a striking resemblance to Victorian England. As Klein Moretti, he forms the Tarot Club dedicated to those with mystical powers, called Beyonders, and the Great Old Ones, Eldritch Gods similar to the Great Ones of Bloodborne.
New Free-to-Play MMORPG Lord of Mysteries Blends Bloodborne and Clair Obscur
The story of Lord of Mysteries is set in the city of Tingen, a fictional city inspired by Victorian England and a setting that looks closely related to Bloodborne‘s Yharnam. While this will be the primary setting for the Lord of Mysteries MMORPG, it appears that other locations will be included at launch. The game is set to follow the events of the web novel, only with players taking on the role of a custom avatar Transmigrator, rather than Klein Moretti himself.
Lord of Mysteries releases August 21 in China, with a global release date still TBA. Interested players can sign up for more information and pre-register for the game on Lord of Mysteries‘s official website.
Who’s That Character?

Identify the silhouettes before time runs out.
Trailers for the game have showcased a complex character creation system, letting players customize their avatar entirely to their liking. There will also be plenty of opportunities to explore Tingen City throughout the Lord of Mysteries game, making it an ideal open-world MMORPG for players wanting to invest themselves in a world similar to Clair Obscur‘s.
In terms of gameplay, Lord of Mysteries is less of a traditional MMORPG like World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy 14, and is more akin to a game like Where Winds Meet with action RPG combat. There are a variety of different styles of combat, including the use of magic as well as firearms in a third-person-shooter-esque gameplay scenario depending on which of the game’s Pathways the player chooses. Pathways act like classes in Lord of Mysteries, and the game will feature 6 official Pathways at launch:
- Bard
- Mystery Pryer
- Apprentice
- Spectator
- Warrior
- Seer
Other popular Pathways from the series, including Assassin, Lawyer, and Monster are also planned for the game in the future. While there isn’t a global release date for the game yet, there is an official anime for Lord of Mysteries that fans can check out in the meantime to catch up with the story ahead of the game’s Chinese launch on August 21. It may not be a perfect substitute for a Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or Bloodborne sequel, but the mix of fantasy, Victorian aesthetics, and Eldritch gods should make Lord of Mysteries the next best thing.
