After weeks of rumors, Bethesda has announced that developer Obsidian Entertainment is indeed working on a new Fallout game. Although this game appears to be separate from Fallout 5, the details surrounding the game’s setting and story are unclear. Obsidian’s previous work on the franchise includes development of fan-favorite Fallout: New Vegas, and director Josh Sawyer is returning to helm this Fallout project as well.
This confirmation comes after the recent shake-up at Xbox, which saw over 3,200 employees laid off as part of a restructuring within the company. Both Obsidian and Bethesda were hit with these layoffs and apparently shifted work internally toward more Fallout experiences. As a result, Obsidian’s work on Avowed 2 was reportedly canceled in favor of this new Fallout game, but there appears to be some hope that Avowed 2 will still be released someday, with a small team continuing to work on it.
A New Fallout Game is Officially in the Works at Obsidian, Bethesda Confirms
In a new statement on the future of the company and its franchises, Bethesda officially confirmed that Obsidian is working on a new Fallout game, as was rumored. Previously, industry insiders had leaked that Obsidian had started development on a new Fallout game following Xbox’s restructuring, but this official statement confirms the original leaks to be true. Bethesda’s statement on the matter is as follows:
“The wasteland continues to expand as we team up once again with our longtime friends at Obsidian Entertainment. We’re happy to confirm they’re working with us on a new Fallout project. We’ll have more to share in the future.”

While this statement doesn’t go into specifics on what players can expect from the project, credible insiders have reported that the new Obsidian-developed Fallout game will be a modern, first-person RPG experience. This should alleviate some fear that Obsidian was only tapped to work on a spin-off game, and though it’s not clear if this game is going to be Fallout: New Vegas 2, it’s unlikely that it will be anything other than the modern Fallout gameplay fans have come to expect from Fallout 3 onward.
Additionally, Bethesda provided further confirmation of other Fallout projects that are currently in development. The long-rumored Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remasters have been confirmed to be real and are in active development. Bethesda also confirmed that the next numbered entry in the Fallout series, Fallout 5, is in the pre-production stage at this time. Fallout 76 fans can also expect a major new content update next year, taking players to the location of Raven Rock and acting as a prequel story to Fallout 3.
Beyond Fallout, this statement from Bethesda also provided updates on games like Starfield and The Elder Scrolls series. The Elder Scrolls 6 is currently the studio’s primary focus, and it’s been suggested that The Elder Scrolls 6 could launch in 2028 or 2029. More updates for Starfield are also confirmed to be in development, and Bethesda has plans to launch new Starborn content early in 2027. The company also plans to support the development of Creations for use across its franchises, including Starfield.
