Campaign Evolved is Being Review Bombed

Campaign Evolved is Being Review Bombed

In the days following its release, gamers have wasted no time in review bombing Halo: Campaign Evolved on multiple platforms. Despite strong critic reviews, a variety of complaints have led to sinking player reviews for Halo: Campaign Evolved, and they’re unlikely to change course.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a ground-up remake of Bungie’s 2001 classic, Halo: Combat Evolved, using Unreal Engine 5. It’s the first title released under the Halo Studios banner, after the studio rebranded from 343 Industries in 2024. The game makes a few significant changes from the original Halo: Combat Evolved, some of which have proven to be controversial among players. As a result, gamers have wasted no time in making sure the developer has heard their thoughts on the matter in the best way they know how – review bombing.

On Steam, Halo: Campaign Evolved has quickly fallen to “Mixed” reviews, with just 63% being positive at the time of writing. Over on Metacritic, the game has a User Score of just 5.2, considerably out of line with the critic’s review average of 80. Halo: Campaign Evolved‘s review scores are solid, if not quite exceptional, indicating that there is a sizable difference in opinion between critics and the average player.

Looking at the player reviews, it’s impossible to point to one single reason as to why Halo: Campaign Evolved is being review bombed. Everyone has their own grievances with the game, with some noting worse acting performances and direction of cutscenes compared to the original. Others had serious performance problems – not unusual with Unreal Engine 5 – while Campaign Evolved‘s new prequel missions also came in for some criticism. That’s before mentioning the Microsoft account sign-in requirement, the enemy AI, the price tag, the lack of multiplayer, or the numerous bugs, all of which were raised by players in the reviews.

Some of the biggest problems players are having with Halo: Campaign Evolved are fundamental. Halo Studios will not go back to fix the voice acting, add multiplayer, or change the cutscene direction after the fact. Performance may improve and bugs can be resolved with patches, but there are definitely some issues here that will remain present for good. As a result, it’s difficult to imagine that the Halo: Campaign Evolved player reviews will change all that much in the future.

While Halo: Campaign Evolved may be getting review bombed by the community, gamers could be set to get more of the same from Halo Studios. The recent release may have teased a Halo 2 remake, which, like Campaign Evolved, would be the second remake of the game. Although the developer has yet to officially confirm that this is the case, it’s a pretty overt teaser, and given previous rumors of full remakes for the original trilogy, it’s easy to see that there could be something to this.
