Divinity Fan Believes They’ve Uncovered the Game’s Villain

A Divinity fan may have uncovered the upcoming RPG’s main villain after decoding runes hidden in a mysterious character’s crown. Divinity is Larian Studios’ next major role-playing game, bringing fans back to Rivellon and following up the enormous success of Baldur‘s Gate 3.

Larian Studios revealed Divinity in a cinematic trailer at The Game Awards in December 2025, marking the studio’s return to its original fantasy universe after completing work on Baldur’s Gate 3. The brutal and somewhat disturbing trailer centered on a tortured prisoner being burned alive during a crowded festival, with his death unleashing acidic blood, plant growths, and the enormous structure Larian calls the Hellstone. Divinity returns fans to the fantasy world of Rivellon and has been described as Larian’s most ambitious RPG yet, though it has no confirmed release date. With few official story details available, fans have started examining the trailer for possible clues about the game’s villain and central conflict.

Larian’s Next Game is Divinity and It’s Going to Be Even Bigger Than Baldur’s Gate 3

From Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios comes “Divinity,” the next title in the Divinity series, revealed at the Game Awards 2025.

Divinity’s Villain May Have Been Hiding in Plain Sight

YouTuber WolfheartFPS discovered the possible Divinity villain while reviewing behind-the-scenes footage shared by Unit Image, the studio responsible for the announcement trailer’s CGI cinematics. The footage offered a much clearer view of the prisoner’s crown than was visible in the final trailer, leading to the determination that the markings on the crown appear to be derived from the Elder Futhark, an ancient runic alphabet that is highly phonetic and hard to translate as it doesn’t have a one-to-one relationship with modern English. After spending roughly five and a half hours studying the symbols, WolfheartFPS arrived at an interpretation resembling “Chaos is coming,” suggesting that the hellish deity will be the villain in Divinity, although the translation did require some guesswork.

Wolfheart’s finding supports theories that the crowned prisoner and the ritual surrounding him are connected to Divinity‘s Lord of Chaos. Existing Divinity lore establishes the Lord of Chaos as the creator of demons and presents him as one of the universe’s oldest and most dangerous divine entities, currently trapped in Tartarus, outside the mortal world. The figure dates back to Divine Divinity in 2002, and as one of the greatest threats to Rivellon, his return in Larian’s largest game yet would only be appropriate.

However, WolfheartFPS’s translation could simply warn of widespread destruction in the Divinity universe rather than actually identifying the Lord of Chaos as the final villain. The Lord of Chaos theory in general predates Wolfheart’s complete translation, with multiple Redditors already noticing the Elder Futhark symbols shortly after the game’s cinematic reveal trailer. Other theories online suggest that the crowned figure, ritual, imagery, and apparent religious symbolism could involve a hidden god masquerading as something benevolent. As of now, WolfheartFPS’s “Chaos is coming” interpretation gives earlier theories about the Lord of Chaos a more direct connection to established lore.

A returning villain with roots in the franchise’s earliest games could reward longtime Divinity fans while introducing newcomers from Baldur‘s Gate 3 to a major part of Rivellon’s history. Larian has stated that prior experience with its Divinity games is not required, though players familiar with the Original Sin duology will recognize some continuity. For now, the production footage and WolfheartFPS’s translation are the only evidence supporting the theory, but this could be the start of various callbacks to Divinity‘s past in the lead-up to release. Larian has not revealed who players will face, but the warning that “Chaos is coming” may have hidden one of Divinity’s biggest secrets in plain sight.
