The recent June PlayStation State of Play event came out swinging with a jaw-dropping blend of game updates and brand-new reveals from Sony‘s brands. This showcase was filled with PlayStation exclusives, remakes, sequels, and even the announcement of a free trial weekend for Marathon and a playable Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo. The event started off strong with Marvel’s Wolverine, but that was simply the tip of the iceberg when it came to the other games that were showcased at the PlayStation State of Play. Sony has been struggling to take full advantage of the current PlayStation generation, but this lineup of games could be hinting at a turning point for the PS5 era.

A quick look at this list makes it clear that it was a pretty stacked lineup. An extended Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay preview at the beginning made some exciting reveals, like first looks at Jean Grey using her powers and Sabretooth in action. Then, a second dose of Marvel was offered with a fresh look into Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. A peek into this Marvel duo was interesting enough, but the superhero offerings were merely appetizers.

Late Summer/Early Fall is Going to Be a Busy Time for Gaming
There were a handful of anticipated games that finally got release dates confirmed. The Marvel’s Wolverine pre-orders were announced alongside reassurance that it was still on track for September 15, but Marvel’s claw-wielding anti-hero definitely won’t be alone during this month. September is going to be packed with titles for PS5 players to choose from.

This year’s September game lineup is going to be hard to beat, especially when it comes to action titles. Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword make up an incredibly strong trio of action offerings that are going to be difficult to choose between. Control Resonant‘s trippy world sets it apart from the three, but games like Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Marvel’s Wolverine might attract more attention by being more straightforward action stories.
Horror lovers will get to dive into spooky season a few days early this year, since Silent Hill: Townfall‘s release date is officially confirmed for late September. The horror series took a bold risk last year with Silent Hill f‘s new story based in Japan, and Konami is continuing this trend of experimenting with new locations set outside the titular town of Silent Hill. Silent Hill: Townfall takes place on a fictional Scottish island called St. Amelia, and it looks like it has all the right ingredients to be a chilling addition to the beloved horror series.
October is Getting Just as Crowded

There are just as many games coming out in October, but this time there is a solid mix of remasters, remakes, and the long-awaited No Rest for the Wicked 1.0 update. One game that is bound to have one of the biggest spotlights that month is Phantom Blade Zero. Originally slated for September, Phantom Blade Zero was pushed back to the end of October to give the game a little extra time in the oven before its debut. Also, the new Rayman remake, Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered, and a new Ace Combat entry are going to be fun nostalgia trips for a lot of gamers.
Other big moments, like the Until Dawn 2 announcement and a fresh look at body horror nightmare ILL, helped round out the event, but they have yet to have official release dates confirmed. One of the most intriguing announcements of the night was the dinosaur horror game The Lost Wild, while Kemuri teased a compelling world. Between these aforementioned games, Bancho the Chef, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and Stuntman: Hollywood, next year is possibly already shaping up to be another big year for releases. There is also the chance that some of these games without revealed launch targets could come out sooner than expected.
Now to Address the God of War-Sized Elephant in the Room
It actually happened. A God of War Laufey announcement closed out the State of Play showcase, and it didn’t skimp on content. This reveal wasn’t a run-of-the-mill trailer. Santa Monica Studio made a wild move by showcasing 20 minutes of opening gameplay that offered a teaser of Faye in action, new companions, and some awesome-looking new gods.
After months of God of War leaks claiming that a Faye game was in the works, it was extra exciting to see the State of Play use its reveal as a grand finale. The God of War Laufey cast is also looking incredibly promising. Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye, while Jack Quaid takes on the role of gelatinous cube Phranque, and Perlina Lau plays Rue.
Unfortunately, a release window for God of War Laufey has yet to be revealed. It’s more than likely going to be set for some time next year, though. This gameplay preview just scratched the surface, but it was definitely the highlight of the showcase. God of War Laufey leaks in the past have claimed that Tyr is also going to be in the game at some point. Only time will tell, but many of the details featured in these leaks were proven true in God of War Laufey‘s reveal.
