Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been out for two years now, and we’re inching closer to the end of the Remake trilogy with Revelation coming out next year. However, it looks like Square Enix hasn’t patched out a bug that’s been plaguing the game since 2024. Well, I use the word “plaguing,” but it’s actually a gift from the gaming gods. A rogue, glitched Chocobo keeps showing up and following players throughout the game, and it shows up in the funniest places.
The bug is catching fans’ attention again after posts by Twitter user @bwautif showcasing the straggling avian showing up in odd places have been going viral. When it was first brought up in Kotaku Slack, Ethan Gach wondered if this was a new glitch or if it had somehow eluded us for two years, and it turns out, yeah, this chocobo has been showing up and terrorizing players since the game launched two years ago.

“Guys help me, I am desperate,” a GameFAQs user wrote in 2024. “A chocobo follows me everywhere even in the cutscenes so characters collide with it. It simply ruins my experience. I think from what happened to myself that this bug began after Gabe’s chocobo ranch side quest itself. When i’m in the near zone of the ranch i don’t have this bug but when i get near Junon and far away from the ranch this chocobo spawns and follows me. When I go to the grasslands through the chocobo fast service (or whatever It Is called) this chocobo despawns.
Please stay in contact with me, I am desperate. I want this bug to disappear because i wanted to enjoy this game as much as possible but i can’t like this.
I also contacted the Square Enix Support Team. I hope they will respond to my email.

Based on the fact that players are still encountering this bug, it seems Square Enix didn’t get back to them. Sure hope this chocobo didn’t show up in any of the more dramatic scenes. Although, maybe the chocobo can save the team from Rebirth’s wishy washy ending? Let him stay, Square Enix. You’ve got a third game to worry about. No time to go back and patch this good boy out of Rebirth.
