Former Rockstar Games technical developer Obbe Vermeij has given his thoughts on the latest round of GTA 6 leaks. Vermeij, who worked at Rockstar from 1995 to 2009, described the GTA 6 leaks as a “nothing burger” and urged fans to stay calm amid the ongoing situation.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently in the midst of an enormous leak by a group or individual known only as Cyberleek. Over the last few days, the leaker has been posting several gameplay snippets from Grand Theft Auto 6, showing off elements of the game that fans have yet to see from Rockstar. Fans have debated how much of the game Cyberleek has at their disposal, with some worried that spoilers could be posted. This has yet to happen, but with Cyberleek still posting leaks and no clear end in sight, it remains a distinct concern for fans in the coming days.
Former Rockstar Dev Says GTA 6 Leaks Are a “Nothing Burger”
Despite this, former Rockstar technical developer Obbe Vermeij has urged fans to calm down in a post on X, suggesting that the “leaks are a nothing burger.” According to Vermeij, the new GTA 6 leaks are only such a big deal as Rockstar is “trying to keep the game under wraps longer than other publishers” as part of its marketing strategy, pointing out that “90% of future players don’t spend their time on the internet looking for video snippets.” He claims that the team at Rockstar would be “a little annoyed about it but not more than that,” drawing on his own experience at the studio during the infamous Hot Coffee scandal. Vermeij also pointed out that GTA 6 would “sell for the next 15 years or so,” and that “leaks are just a tiny blip” in what will be a very long lifespan for the game.
It’s certainly easy to get caught up in the leaks, and the nature of social media means they can be difficult to avoid at times. And Vermeij is certainly correct in suggesting that Rockstar and Take-Two’s secretive marketing campaign has done little to help matters. Gamers are naturally more interested in GTA 6‘s gameplay, especially 13 years after the last official release in the series, so it makes sense that leaks would draw more attention than usual.
Take-Two’s subpoenas to Discord and Microsoft indicate an intention to quickly uncover the source of the leak and stop it in the future. However, there is no indication that GTA 6‘s leaker has been caught at this point, and it remains to be seen how long new gameplay footage will continue to be released.
While leaks will obviously continue to inspire curiosity among the fanbase, gamers do not have to wait long to see the game on Rockstar’s terms. GTA 6‘s Extended Look presentation on Netflix is going ahead as normal on August 27, and although fans don’t quite know what to expect, it will be good to see a more polished version of what Rockstar has been working on, rather than short gameplay clips chosen by a leaker.
