A fan of God of War Ragnarok has datamined some of the game’s unused files, and the resulting data may offer a hint at which direction the series is headed in next. God of War Ragnarok, the 2022 sequel to 2018’s God of War reboot, serves as the finale of the series’ Norse duology of games, wrapping up the story while leaving the door open for future tales to be told.
Before relocating to the realm of Norse mythology, Santa Monica Studios’ God of War series began life as a trilogy of PS2 games set in Ancient Greece. The games focus on Spartan warrior Kratos, who was appointed by the goddess Athena to exact revenge upon Ares, the infamous god of war and Kratos’ former mentor. Throughout that trilogy, Kratos’ abilities are bolstered as his quest becomes more personal and more grand. Santa Monica Studios recently announced that it would be remaking the original trilogy of God of War games for modern consoles. The side-scrolling prequel God of War Sons of Sparta was also released to coincide with this announcement.
Fans Discover God of War Ragnarok Files That May Hint at the Next Game in the Series
A God of War Ragnarok fan may have uncovered a hint at the direction of the franchise by datamining some of the game’s unused cutscenes. In a Reddit post, user TheMorse_ describes a host of cutscenes uncovered within Ragnarok‘s files. In the first scene described, figures who are presumed to be gods are heard discussing Kratos and his son Atreus. The post theorizes that one of these figures may be Athena herself, who appeared as an ethereal vision to Kratos in 2018’s God of War after serving a major role in the original trilogy. The character believed to be Athena, clad in a robe that disguises her appearance, can be heard uttering the phrase “To lefkó fídi tha se fáei,” which is Greek for “The white snake will eat you.” It’s unclear which white snake is being referred to, although the massive serpent Jörmungandrplays a significant part in the plot of both Norse God of War titles.
Another cutscene retrieved from the data sees Atreus speaking to a mysterious figure referred to as Mau. The word “mau” is Egyptian for “cat,” and the Reddit post notes that it is a name associated with one of the manifestations of the Egyptian god Ra. This may also clarify which white snake was being referenced in the previously uncovered cutscene, as a white serpent known as Apophis is said to have battled and lost to Ra every day in Egyptian mythology. Fans have long speculated that the next God of War game could be set in Egypt, and this new data could support those rumors.
The Reddit user revealed that they had previously datamined from the files of God of War 2018, discovering that the game’s unused cutscenes contained hints at Ragnarok‘s earliest moments. It’s possible that the information uncovered within Ragnarok‘s files could serve the same purpose for the next game in the God of War franchise.
Many fans have assumed that Atreus may be the focus of a new God of War game, as Kratos’ son has shown potential as a future protagonist. His role in both 2018’s God of War and God of War Ragnarok is extremely significant, and he would be a fitting character to take the reins from his father. These newly discovered scenes would suggest that this is exactly the plan for Santa Monica Studios, though time will tell exactly what such a shift would mean for the future of the series.
