Marathon Players are About to Learn What Extraction Shooters are All About

Bungie reminds players of the approaching end of season for Marathon and, in terms of an extraction shooter, it has major implications that some may not be aware of. After launching back at the start of March, Marathon is finally approaching the end of its first season. Unlike Bungie’s other live-service title, Destiny 2, a season coming to an end in Marathon is very different and players should be aware of what that means in an extraction shooter.

While the discussion remains around Bungie’s impairment loss, declining player numbers, and what that could mean long term for the studio and its IPs, Marathon doesn’t appear to be slowing down whatsoever. Earlier in May, creative director Julia Nardin admitted that Bungie has plans to continue evolving Marathon‘s narrative over the next few years. Part of that is at the start of seasons, which Bungie also regards as a natural starting point both for players after the seasonal wipe and from a story perspective as well.

Marathon Addresses Player Feedback and Reveals Upcoming Game Adjustments

Bungie digs into player feedback for Marathon, revealing some of the top concerns as well as how it will be fixing things in the future.

Marathon’s Seasonal Reset: What is Kept and Reset?

In a new Tweet, the official Marathon account let players know that the current season is coming to an end soon. As Bungie revealed prior to launch, Marathon will wipe player accounts between seasons, a common mechanic that other extraction shooters like Escape from Tarkov utilize. Season 2 is set to begin on June 2, with Bungie planning a full reveal a week before on May 25. However, there may be questions about what is reset, what players can keep across seasons, and if there are any sort of progression bonuses. Thankfully, the answers are now available.

While other extraction shooters like ARC Raiders have attempted to modify seasonal resets, Bungie appears to be heading towards a more traditional route. At the start of each season, Bungie confirmed that it will be resetting the following settings and features for each player:

  • Runner Level
  • Rank
  • Vault & Loadout Contents
  • Credits
  • Schemas
  • Faction Level & Upgrades
  • Priority Contracts

However, some things do carry over, so players aren’t losing everything once Nightfall arrives on June 2. Specifically, players will carry over all unlocked factions, cosmetics (earned and purchased), all Lux and Silk, as well as Codex entries that have been obtained. Keep in mind that in the final weeks of the season, Bungie is also increasing rewards, making Cryo Archive more available to run, and escalating the UESC forces on all maps.

Not only that, once Season 2 starts in Marathon, players will be able to claim sponsored kits from the Codex that are based on their Season 1 progress. For those who made it to Level 10 or 25 with a runner, they’ll unlock an Enhanced Cyberacme Sponsored Kit. For Level 50 runners, they’ll get access to a Deluxe Cyberacme Sponsored Kit, and then the ultimate prize of a Superior Cyberacme Sponsored Kit will unlock for Level 75 runners.

Bungie is likely hoping that Season 2’s launch will represent a revival of sorts for Marathon. While fans will get a full rundown on May 25, there are numerous new features and content that Bungie has already shared about Marathon’s upcoming season. In addition to Night versions of maps like Dire Marsh, a new runner shell called Sentinel is also joining the game. Paired alongside the new Cradle system, which promises to allow players to further customize and refine their shell stats, fans are hoping that additional tweaks and changes in Marathon Season 2 will lead to a better and more popular game.
