Hardcore Single-Player Survival Game is Blowing Up on Steam

Hardcore Single-Player Survival Game is Blowing Up on Steam

A brand-new hardcore survival extraction shooter, Road to Vostok, is currently blowing up on Steam. Released on April 7, Road to Vostok has become something of an overnight sensation, soaring up the ranks of Steam’s top-selling games list.

Announced all the way back in February 2022, Road to Vostok is a single-player survival game set in a post-apocalyptic version of the border zone between Finland and Russia. Inspired by games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Road to Vostok puts realistic physics, dynamic weather, and grounded FPS mechanics at its forefront, alongside a generally ominous, foreboding atmosphere. On April 7, 2026, Road to Vostok finally made its way into Steam Early Access, where it was given a retail price of $19.99, though early adopters can grab a 25% discount until April 21.

Steam Users Have Until April 16 to Get Co-Op Sci-Fi Game for Free

Steam users that want to get a co-op sci-fi game for free have until April 16 to add it to their digital libraries.

Road to Vostok is Already a Top Selling Steam Game

On April 8, a day after the survival game’s Steam Early Access release, the official Road to Vostok X account shared a post reflecting on the launch. The post (first reported on by Rock Paper Shotgun) opens with the line, “The past 24 hours have been absolutely insane,” and goes on to state that Road to Vostok is currently a top seller in many countries and that the game holds a ‘Very Positive’ user rating on Steam. The post from the solo developer behind Road to Vostok ends by saying that the game’s launch “has been extremely successful,” and that the production budget for the game’s early access future has already been secured.

Back in January, Road to Vostok‘s X account shared that the game’s public demo had reached 1 million downloads, and it seems that early sign of success has carried over to the game’s early access launch. At the time of writing (April 9 at 12pm ET), Road to Vostok is at the number 16 spot on Steam’s Top Sellers list, coming just below Resident Evil 4 Remake, but just above fellow extraction shooter ARC Raiders.

Over on tracker site SteamDB, Road to Vostok currently has 5,096 concurrent players. While this active player count doesn’t come close to ARC Raiders‘ 79,455 concurrent players or even Marathon‘s 12,278, it’s very strong for an indie game, particularly one that puts an emphasis on hardcore survival mechanics. Road to Vostok also seems to be a hit with those who were anticipating the game, with it currently sitting at a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam after 1,808 player reviews.

According to Road to Vostok‘s official Steam page, the game is being perceived internally as a “long-term project” that will remain in early access for approximately 2–4 years. The final version of Road to Vostok will include around twice as much content as is currently available in its early access form, all of which will be added to the game via updates and new builds that will be completely free for those who have purchased the early access version. Those wanting a taste of Road to Vostok‘s gameplay loop can still play the free demo on Steam.
