Insomniac Has Bad News For a Potential Spider-Man Release on Xbox

Marvel’s Spider-Man isn’t coming to Xbox anytime soon, Insomniac Games has confirmed. Both PlayStation and Xbox have been slowly moving away from console exclusivity, with Microsoft even bringing one of its biggest franchises to its main competitor in Halo: Campaign Evolved. Unfortunately, it seems Sony isn’t returning the favor with its beloved Marvel’s Spider-Man games.

Some big projects are coming down the pipeline for Insomniac. Its much-anticipated Wolverine game is finally set to come out later this year, and Peter Parker’s voice actor has confirmed Spider-Man 3 is in the works, even if the studio itself has yet to announce it. Leaks also suggest there will be a Venom spin-off down the line, but unfortunately for Xbox fans, Insomniac has poured cold water on the idea that its superhero games could be getting a platform expansion in the future.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: What Order Should You Play The Games In?

Wondering how to play Marvel’s Spider-Man games in the right order? This guide breaks down the best sequence to experience the story and gameplay.

Insomniac Says Marvel’s Spider-Man on Xbox is ‘Not Likely’

When a now-deleted tweet asked if Marvel’s Spider-Man could come to Xbox, the official Insomniac account offered a brief and disappointing reply: “not likely.” While that terse response leaves little room for interpretation, it’s easy to understand where the user was coming from in asking about an Xbox release. Sony-published games like Helldivers 2 and Marathon have notably received Xbox support, a trend that has seemed to grow as Xbox does the same with its once-exclusives. There may have also been a glimmer of hope when Marvel Rivals got an Insomniac Spider-Man skin, bringing an admittedly small element of the PlayStation console exclusive to a game available on Xbox. That may not have meant anything on its own, but in light of other Sony-published games moving to Xbox, it easily became something fans may have read into.

That’s not to say that future Spider-Man games will never venture beyond Sony systems. Insomniac released Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC in 2025, three years after doing the same with the first Spider-Man and the Miles Morales spin-off. Given the leap to PC, an Xbox release seems like less of a leap, but Sony has made a habit of giving its console exclusives PC versions without bringing them to competitors’ consoles. Notably, franchises like God of War and The Last of Us have also gotten Steam releases but have stopped there. While the publisher may be open to capitalizing on the PC market, it has kept many of its biggest franchises as PlayStation console exclusives, even if there are a couple of exceptions.

Still, it’s worth noting that Insomniac did claim Spider-Man would never get a PC release at one point. It’s hard to look at that and not think that an Xbox version in the future is still possible, despite what the studio is saying now. At the same time, there’s plenty of reason for Insomniac and Sony to stick to their guns and not go beyond a PC release. All three Marvel’s Spider-Man games are among the top-selling PlayStation titles of all time, at least in the U.S. That popularity makes a strong case to keep the franchise as a console exclusive to drive more people to Sony systems, especially if Sony wants to use the next Spider-Man to promote the PS6, the same way it did with Miles Morales and the PS5.

Despite both PlayStation and Xbox showing a noticeable shift away from exclusivity, the practice is not entirely dead. There are at least eight big PS5 exclusives set to come out in 2026 alone, including Saros, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and Insomniac’s own Marvel’s Wolverine. It’s unclear if any of those will ever move to Xbox, and at least a couple will almost certainly get a PC version, as has been Sony’s pattern lately, but console exclusives are clearly alive and well. Platform expansions after launch may have become more common, but things don’t look good for hopes of Marvel’s Spider-Man on Xbox.
