It’s Officially the End of an Era for the PS4

It’s Officially the End of an Era for the PS4

It’s the end of an era for the PlayStation 4, as Sony’s hugely popular eighth generation home console is missing out on one of the year’s biggest releases. Sony released the PlayStation 4 in 2013 to a great deal of fanfare, and the console would go on to build an incredible library of exclusive games and top-tier multiplatform releases. There are still millions of gamers worldwide that play PS4 as their primary console, but after 13 years of support, it’s clear that the console is finally being sunsetted.

The first sign of the PS4’s demise came last year when Sony announced that it would stop making the console a focus when it comes to its PlayStation Plus game offerings. This change went into effect this past January, though, perhaps by coincidence, there have still been fresh PS Plus games for PS4 gamers to add to their digital libraries or play through the Extra/Premium lineup.

A handful of digital adventures currently head toward a permanent exit on the PlayStation store as the early summer season officially kicks off.

Call of Duty Won’t Be on PS4 This Year

But now there’s been yet another blow to the PlayStation 4. Xbox recently confirmed that Call of Duty is skipping eighth generation consoles this year, marking the first time a new CoD hasn’t released for PS4 since the console launched. This is good news for Call of Duty fans that are anxious for the franchise to leave outdated hardware behind and fully embrace the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but it may be a heartbreaking revelation for those that are still gaming on PS4. For the first time in 13 years, you will need to have a powerful PC, a PlayStation 5, or an Xbox Series X/S console to play the latest Call of Duty because no PS4 version will be offered in any capacity.

Based on the leaks and rumors surrounding the game, it seems as though this year’s Call of Duty is going to be a particularly exciting one. Last year’s Call of Duty was one of the worst-performing to date, but rumor has it that the 2026 game will see Infinity Ward back at the helm to make Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. A Modern Warfare 4 that isn’t held back by the PS4 and Xbox One could potentially be the shot in the arm that the blockbuster first-person shooter franchise needs to get back on top, but time will tell how it all goes down.

In the meantime, PS4 gamers that still have yet to upgrade should consider doing it sooner rather than later. The PS5 price hikes are already in effect, meaning that those upgrading today will be paying more than someone did six years ago, but there’s always the chance that the price could increase again. Of course, it’s also possible that PS5 console prices will eventually come down as well, but with the memory crisis and other global issues playing a role, it’s hard to say when that will be. Chances are it won’t be before the new Call of Duty game releases this year.

There will still be some new games released on PS4 even with Call of Duty finally leaving the console behind, but expect the titles to be fewer and farther between going forward. In some ways, it’s sad to see support dwindle for the PS4, but there’s no denying that the console had an incredible run.
