A brand-new 8-player co-op survival game, where players try to survive a convergence of tornadoes, has hit Steam and received some strong reviews at launch. For anyone who enjoys co-op games on Steam, especially those that lean more toward friendslop, it’s a game worth watching.
Of course, it seems that there’s been nothing short of a massive surge in co-op friendslop games. A recently announced once involves players being the worst airline crew on a ship, a recent one in FixForce is incredibly fun and involves playful construction work, and viral hit Meccha Chameleon fits into this genre too. There’s probably something to be said about the influx of co-op games in a post-COVID pandemic world, but the latest Steam release accomplishes what they all set out to do: Dumb. Fun.

Funnel Runners released on Steam on July 16, earning 87% Very Positive reviews. It is a co-op survival game where up to eight players have ~20 minutes to scavenge a doomed town, repair a broken van, and escape before a devastating tornado tears everything apart. The storm is the real enemy here, with dynamic weather, collapsing buildings, lightning, hail, acid rain, and flying debris constantly forcing players to change plans on the fly. While it can be played solo, the game is also very clearly a friendslop game that relies on the kind of panic that only exists when teamwork turns to chaos.
Funner Runners is priced at $14.99 but has a 10% launch discount available until July 23, bringing it down to $13.49

Although Funnel Runners only just launched into Early Access, its first wave of Steam reviews has been enthusiastic. Players have praised the game’s surprisingly impressive visuals, dynamic weather system, tense atmosphere, and the sheer chaos that comes from trying to outrun an ever-growing tornado with friends. Many reviews still acknowledge that it is a Steam Early Access release, with recurring feedback pointing to repetitive objectives after several runs, a need for additional maps, progression systems, and more varied mission types.
It’s worth noting that these review numbers come from Steam where, in roughly 24 hours, Funnel Runners has accumulated 335+ reviews (getting the 87% rating toted here). That may not be the most reviews on Steam, but given the indie scale of Funnel Runners, that’s incredibly impressive. Especially since the overall sentiment is positive, with many of the aforementioned reviews recommending the friendslop game and expressing confidence in its overall direction, despite a few content issues.
How it evolves throughout Early Access and how player reception ultimately ends up remains to be seen, but it’s very clear that it stuck the launch landing. Sometimes that’s the hardest part. Indie games release on Steam every day and many of them go completely unnoticed, even friendslop games amid the ongoing friendslop renaissance, so it’s good to see the game get the traction it currently has.
