“Games like Stardew Valley” might be getting a little old at this point, especially when they all seem to look and play so similarly that it almost defeats the purpose of recommending them. However, occasionally, one of them will show up with a genuinely fresh take on the formula or some sort of angle that makes it all the more fascinating. The latest to accomplish that for me is Village in the Shade, and not just because of its unique, hand-painted art style, either. It’s one thing when a game like Stardew Valley actually manages to break out of that all-too-familiar pixel art-sized box that most of them seem to succumb to, but it’s something else entirely when one throws in an element that no one would ever expect from the farming sim genre.
These games are meant to be cozy—it’s in their very nature. Many of them will have you running around cramming as many mundane tasks as you can into one day, but in the grand scheme of things, they’re still essentially about managing a second life that you actually feel like you’re in control of. It’s that feeling that you can do all of those things, and the fact that they actually have a noticeable impact on the progression of your life, ultimately building up to something that will, in the end, make it all worth it. But when a game like Village in the Shade comes along and throws a wrench in that formula with an unexpected, horrifying twist, what was once presumed to be cozy all of a sudden becomes something much darker after the sun goes down, and it’s abundantly clear that we aren’t in Stardew Valley anymore.
Village in the Shade Is Secretly a Horror Game
Here’s the deal—on the surface, Village in the Shade looks like your run-of-the-mill farm life sim in the same vein as Stardew Valley, and that alone makes it appealing to fans of ConcernedApe’s breakout hit. To be fair, it has all the ingredients that a game like that is expected to have. There are traditional Japanese festivals and activities you can participate in, like the summer festival and cherry-blossom viewing, you can decorate your own home with furniture you purchase in town, you can even build relationships with the other NPCs throughout the village, and, of course, you can farm to your heart’s content. But, based on what I can see, that’s all just an illusion.

Village in the Shade, from the looks of it, seems to be about the bliss of ignorance in embracing the cozy farm life. In other games like Stardew Valley, that cozy farm life really is what it’s all about. After all, that’s why we play those games, and we don’t expect them to offer us anything else. But Village in the Shade‘s cozy side feels like more of a front than anything else. It’s not that you can’t play it solely for that aspect of it. In fact, those are the “rules,” according to the game’s description. Rather, it’s that, in approaching this particular entry just like the rest, you’re effectively ignoring its more honest side that it claims it doesn’t want you to see.
Village in the Shade’s Kagatsu Is Hiding a Dark Secret
The premise of Village in the Shade is pretty simple: you move to Kagatsu, a remote Japanese mountain village, where you’re free to settle into a quiet new life of farming, decorating your home, getting to know the locals, and generally enjoying everything the countryside has to offer. The catch is that Kagatsu has a few rules you’re expected to follow, including not talking to strangers, never leaving the village, and, most importantly, staying indoors at night. From there, the game essentially leaves the decision up to you. You can follow those rules, mind your own business, and continue living the peaceful farming life you came there for, or you can start asking questions and digging into the truth behind Kagatsu, knowing full well that whatever is hiding beneath its cozy exterior is probably something the villagers would rather you never see.
Village in the Shade‘s developer describes its mature content as “cartoon blood and violence,” “horror themes,” and “themes of suicide,” so anyone sensitive to those subjects may want to keep that in mind before diving in.
Village in the Shade’s Darker Side Has My Interests Piqued
As a fan of farm life sims and horror games alike, I’m naturally intrigued by Village in the Shade, but what really has my interest piqued is the way those two sides of it seem to be working against each other. The idea that I can spend my days farming, decorating my house, and getting to know everyone in Kagatsu, all while being told not to leave the village or go outside after dark, is exactly what makes me want to break all the rules in the first place. There’s something inherently unsettling about being handed this picture-perfect little life and then being warned not to look too closely at it, because at that point, how am I supposed to do anything else? I already know there’s something wrong with Kagatsu, and the fact that Village in the Shade seemingly lets me decide how long I want to pretend otherwise makes its premise far more interesting to me than another farming sim that simply wants me to make friends and grow turnips.
Apparently, things can get pretty nasty once that illusion starts falling apart, too. Some of the Steam reviews specifically mention jump scares, and I have to admit, that might be the detail that has me most curious about how far the game is actually willing to go. Unfortunately, there is a pretty big catch at the moment. Village in the Shade is already available on Steam, but it doesn’t currently support English, so playing it right now isn’t really an option for me. That might ultimately be for the best, though, because this game doesn’t look like one I want to fumble my way through without understanding what anyone is saying.
Then there’s the price. Village in the Shade is currently around $50, which is a lot more than I would normally expect to spend on this type of game, especially when I haven’t even had the chance to play it for myself yet. Under most circumstances, that would be enough to put me firmly in the “wait for a sale” camp, but apparently all it takes to get me to reconsider is hiding a horror game underneath a cozy farming sim. I’m already willing to bite the bullet on this one, and thankfully, I won’t have to stay on PC to do it. Village in the Shade is coming to PS5, Switch, and Switch 2 later this year with English support, so once that version arrives, I fully intend to find out exactly what Kagatsu doesn’t want me seeing after dark.
