New Resident Evil 4 Remake Leak Reveals Scrapped Detail

A new leak for the Resident Evil 4 remake has revealed that developer Capcom initially planned to connect its lore to Resident Evil Village, though it later decided to scrap the idea. The eighth installment actually features a reference to Resident Evil 4, so this detail would have served as a reciprocation that connects the two installments even further.

The Duke in Resident Evil Village has a famous line that goes, “What are you buying? Just something an old friend of mine used to say.” Those who have played Resident Evil‘s fourth installment likely know that this is one of the Merchant’s catchphrases, and the Duke Easter egg suggested the two dealers might actually know each other. Now, it has been revealed that the Resident Evil 4 remake wanted to acknowledge that reference.

New $1,699 Resident Evil 4 Release Officially Coming in Fall 2026

The Resident Evil 4 remake gets a brand-new official release in 2026, with an eye-watering premium price that makes it too expensive for many fans.

Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Merchant Was Supposed to Drop a Duke Reference

Modder Keff0 recently discovered 671 unused voice lines on the Resident Evil 4 remake’s PS5 disc that included a Duke Easter egg. In one of these lines, the Merchant says, “Ah, I see you’re no stranger to villages. The Duke? Lad shows promise.” This simple line would connect the lore of Resident Evil 4 and Village through their iconic traders. That said, it is unclear who the Merchant would say the scrapped line to. Leon is not believed to have visited the village in RE8, so perhaps the line was directed at Ada Wong, as she has been to plenty of places.

It is not clear why Capcom decided to remove the other voice lines in the leak too. Many of them seem to be simple interactions between Leon and other Resident Evil 4 characters, like Ashley and Luis, along with some inner monologue-style sentences meant to drop hints and guide the player. For instance, Leon has a removed line that goes, “If there’s fuel around here, that’s where it would be,” which serves as a subtle clue for an objective that requires the player to find fuel for the boat in Resident Evil 4‘s Chapter 3.

As reported by the RENEWS account on Twitter, the scrapped lines haven’t been the only thing modder Keff0 has managed to unearth from Resident Evil 4‘s files. Keff0 has also been able to rebuild a character named Yuri who was never included in the final game. Yuri is believed to be a gang member with ties to Albert Wesker and a crime organization known as Scorpio. It is unclear if Yuri would ever have been a playable character in the Resident Evil 4 remake, but some fans theorize that he was originally planned to be part of the story in the Separate Ways DLC.

With or without any Resident Evil 8 references, Resident Evil 4 remains one of the best remakes of the decade. Capcom’s official sales report suggests that the remake has sold 16 million copies across all platforms, making it the company’s sixth most popular release. Whether Capcom will ever return to the game and surprise fans with another DLC remains to be seen, but the latest discoveries show that there may still be plenty of secrets left to uncover.
