Nintendo Switch Gamers Have New Free Game They Can Claim Right Now

A new app is now available on Nintendo Switch called Hello, Yoshi, and it’s free for all users to claim. Nintendo Switch has been on the market for more than nine years now, and in that time the system hasn’t gotten much in the way of free software. While there are some cheap gems on the eShop, and lots of games to play for those with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, there aren’t a lot of completely free experiences to find on the platform.

Hello, Mario was released on Nintendo Switch earlier this year, offering a unique app that allows players to interact with the video game icon. Drawing inspiration from Super Mario 64, the app encourages users to mess around with Mario’s face, stretching his mustache, tugging on his ears, and more. While simple, the app is meant to appeal to younger players, giving them a more relaxing experience compared to most Mario games.

A Switch Game is Being Delisted on June 1

Nintendo Switch owners have just a couple of months remaining to buy a well-regarded game before it gets delisted from the eShop.

Hello, Yoshi is Now Free on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch 2 and original Switch owners can claim Hello, Yoshi for free right now. The app seems very similar to Hello, Mario, swapping out the plumber for his dinosaur companion, instead. Players can stretch the character’s face, play peekaboo, and make various items appear from the Mario franchise. Given Yoshi’s substantial role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it makes sense that Nintendo would offer a new piece of software specifically to appeal to younger fans eager for more.

It’s possible more of these apps could be released on Nintendo Switch in the future, but it might depend on the reception from parents and younger players. There’s no shortage of Mario family characters that would work for this sort of thing. Options based on Bowser or Wario would make sense, and could offer something different from more heroic characters like Mario and Yoshi. Through the company’s My Mario campaign, Nintendo seems to be looking for unique ways to make its major characters appeal to younger audiences.

Based on the subject matter and amount of content, Hello, Yoshi likely won’t hold much appeal to older fans of the character. Thankfully, there are plenty of other options featuring the Yoshis on Switch 2 as well as the original Switch. Since debuting in Super Mario World in 1991, Yoshi has been a staple of the Super Mario franchise. As a result, Yoshi is playable in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, as well as Mario Kart World, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and lots more.

In addition to those existing titles, a brand-new Yoshi game is set to be released next month. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on May 21, marking the character’s first starring role on the new system. The upcoming game sees the Yoshis drawn into a book inhabited by new creatures. The gameplay seems to revolve around cataloging these creatures as Yoshi interacts with them. For example, some creatures will have different effects on Yoshi if he eats them, while others can ride on his back. With the character’s popularity at a high right now, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book could be the next must-own game on Nintendo Switch 2.
