PS Plus Subscribers Are Mad About the January Free Games, and You Can’t Really Blame Them

PS Plus Subscribers Are Mad About the January Free Games, and You Can’t Really Blame Them

A lot of PlayStation Plus subscribers aren’t happy about the January 2026 free games, getting the new year off on the wrong foot. As one might imagine, fan reaction to the free PlayStation Plus free games in any given month varies dramatically. There are some months when the majority of subscribers seem happy with the free game offerings, and then there are months when subscribers are livid about what’s on offer.

As far as the free PS Plus games for January 2026 go, subscribers are being given Need for Speed Unbound, Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, and Core Keeper. Need for Speed Unbound is a stylish racer from EA, while Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is a remake of the cult classic Wii 3D platformer. Core Keeper, meanwhile, is a co-op survival/sandbox game with a retro art style that has often been compared to games like Minecraft. Core Keeper earned mostly positive reviews, but the Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Need for Speed Unbound reception was more mixed.

PS Plus Free Games for January 2026 Explained

PS Plus free games for January 2026 include an open-world street racer, a remake of a beloved Disney classic, and a top-down sandbox survival game.

PlayStation Plus subscribers themselves are pretty mixed on the January 2026 lineup, and it’s largely due to Need for Speed Unbound being the headlining game. As pointed out by Reddit user deaddr3v, Need for Speed Unbound was previously part of the Extra tier, first joining in February 2024 and not leaving until August 2024. Chances are if you are an Extra or Premium tier subscriber that was interested in playing Need for Speed Unbound, you would have already done so. Effectively, it means those signed up for the higher tiers of the service are getting less value, though at least they will be able to keep the game now for as long as they stay subscribed.

Free PS PluS Plus Games for January 2026 List

  • Need for Speed Unbound
  • Epic Mickey: Rebrushed
  • Core Keeper

The comment section on the Reddit post are full of people expressing their disappointment with the free PS Plus games for January 2026. Beyond the fact that Need for Speed Unbound was previously a part of the Extra tier of the service, it is an older racing game. It being a racing game means it also has relatively niche appeal compared to other games that have been given away for free through PS Plus.

Coming off the December 2025 free PS Plus games, which included five titles instead of the usual three, subscribers can’t be blamed if they’re a little underwhelmed by what the January free games have to offer. In fact, expectations may have been even higher than usual because of an announcement Sony made at the beginning of 2025, where it said that starting in January 2026, PS4 would no longer be a focus for PS Plus.

While some worried that this would mean fewer free PS Plus games every month, it seems those worries were unfounded. Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Core Keeper both have native PS4 versions available, so the only game exclusive to PS5 gamers is Need for Speed Unbound, arguably the most underwhelming game in the lineup. Some had anticipated that eliminating PS4 focus would mean more PS5 games, and therefore a more consistent supply of newer and more exciting free games.

However, it’s worth pointing out that Sony never said that it would stop giving away free games to PS4 gamers entirely. Whenever a free PS Plus game happens to be a cross-gen release, it will be available to PS4 gamers as well. What’s changed is that there is no longer a guarantee that PS4 gamers will get free games in any given month, and so they should keep that in mind.

The free PS Plus games for January 2026 haven’t exactly clicked with subscribers, but it will be interesting to see what the rest of the year has in store for Sony’s subscription service.
