PS5 Gamers Have Wasted Absolutely Zero Time Pre-Ordering Xbox’s Starfield

PlayStation 5 gamers have jumped on the opportunity to pre-order Bethesda’s space RPG Starfield after its announcement for the platform. Starfield already finds itself near the top of the PlayStation Store’s pre-order charts, as the Xbox console exclusive finally makes its way to the PlayStation 5 for the first time.

Bethesda recently confirmed that Starfield is coming to PS5 on April 7, 2026, alongside the Free Lanes update and Terran Armada expansion. The game first launched on PC and Xbox Series X/S in September 2023, so it has taken two and a half years for it to arrive on Sony’s console. After Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda, keeping Starfield as an Xbox console exclusive was a major statement from the company, even if it was always expected to arrive on the PlayStation 5 at some point.

Despite the PS5 release only being announced a few days ago, Starfield‘s Premium Edition already sits third in the PlayStation Store pre-order charts, behind Crimson Desert and its Deluxe Edition in the US. The base version of Starfield is sixth, behind 007 First Light and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight‘s Deluxe Edition. Despite the fact that Starfield wasn’t exactly Bethesda’s best-received game (currently holding “Mixed” Steam reviews), PlayStation gamers are still clearly excited to finally get their hands on the sci-fi RPG after a two-and-a-half-year delay. Exact sales numbers are not public, but it’s reasonable to assume the game is performing well ahead of its April 7 PS5 release based on these early pre-order charts.

It’s interesting that Starfield‘s Premium Edition is outselling the base game on PlayStation 5. The Premium Edition comes with both expansions: Shattered Space and the upcoming Terran Armada. It’s still pretty expensive at $69.99, but PS5 gamers want to give the complete experience a chance to impress, rather than playing the version of the game that doesn’t include all the content Bethesda has released so far.

Starfield‘s arrival on PlayStation 5 has always felt like a guarantee, although Bethesda was silent on the possibility for a long time. Todd Howard recently revealed that Bethesda always wanted Starfield on PS5, describing it as a “matter of time.” Even with Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda, it’s somewhat surprising that the wait for the PS5 version has gone on as long as two and a half years.

Although the majority of the developers at Bethesda are now developing The Elder Scrolls 6, it seems as though the studio still has some plans for Starfield yet. A recent rumor suggests that Starfield may also arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2, though this hasn’t been confirmed. While rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt, it’s important to note that Bethesda recently released Fallout 4 on the Switch 2, with Oblivion Remastered coming later this year. This indicates the growing importance of Nintendo’s latest console for Bethesda, making a Starfield port a distinct possibility.
