A well-reviewed dark fantasy soulslike RPG inspired by FromSoftware’s classic King’s Field series and its Soulsborne games is finally making the jump to PS5 on July 30. Of course, the PS5 is no stranger to soulslike games, but few ever capture the magic of FromSoftware. This soulslike game was previously locked to Steam/PC, and that will no longer be the case soon.
Without a doubt, the soulslike genre has exploded over the past decade, with tons of developers trying to replicate FromSoftware’s formula. While many borrow the challenging combat and dark fantasy aesthetic, far fewer manage to recreate the sense of atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and rewarding world design that made FromSoftware’s games stand out in the first place. Games like Lies of P have managed to challenge FromSoftware, but that’s one of the few to come to mind, and another—in the eyes of many, especially classic King’s Field fans—is Verho: Curse of Faces.

Verho: Curse of Faces revived the slower, more methodical game design theories of King’s Field, clearly drawing inspiration from FromSoftware without just copying its homework, when it initially released in November 2025. Now, it’s bringing that old-school Soulslike game design (as King’s Field laid the groundwork for Dark Souls and Demon’s Souls) to PS5 on July 30, as well as Nintendo Switch and Xbox hardware. In it, players fight to survive the cursed land of Yariv, where revealing the player’s face to anyone means instant deateh due to the titular curse, where players navigate melee combat, interconnected dungeons, cryptic storytelling, challenging combat, and every key design ethos of the Soulslike genre.

And a game that delivers on all those design elements too. Over on Steam, Verho: Curse of Faces sits at a 92% Very Positive review rating, the equivalent of a 9.2/10 rating, which is no easy feat—especially with 1000+ reviews. Positive reviews praise its atmosphere, pacing, and all the aforementioned key Soulslike features, although some users do criticize some of its old-school mechanics, its pacing, and its minimalist storytelling. Even then, the overall consensus is that Verho is a hidden gem of a Soulslike game for fans of retro dungeon crawlers and FromSoftware’s earliest RPGs, with many calling it one of the best modern spiritual successors to King’s Field.
Overall, PS5 and console users will be able to experience developer Kasur Games and publisher CobraTekku Games’ Verho: Curse of Faces when it launches on PlayStation 5, Switch, and Xbox Series X on July 30. The console version will retail for $24.99, while the announcement trailer also revealed that a free content update is currently in development for all versions of the game.
