Red Dead Redemption 2 is making its way to PS Plus again, but this time around it feels different. Rockstar’s epic western tale about the quickly fading world of the American outlaw is still one of the most celebrated games of the past decade, and its PS Plus return seems like it could be teeing Red Dead Redemption 2 up for the long-awaited PS5 upgrade.

Of course, nothing like the PS5 upgrade has been confirmed yet. Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS Plus again could simply be a fun return to generate some extra Rockstar-centric hype ahead of GTA 6. The game is being added to the PS Plus May 2026 catalog at a very interesting time, though. Between Two-Two Interactive’s upcoming earnings call, the anticipation of GTA 6 overshadowing the industry, and the first Red Dead Redemption being added to PS Plus late last year, it feels like the stars might be aligning for the RDR2 upgrade to become a reality.

GTA 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Image Comparison Shows Massive Graphical Upgrade

A side-by-side comparison between Grand Theft Auto 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2 reveals how far Rockstar’s visuals have come in recent years.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Fans Might Want to Start Crossing Their Fingers for a Full-Blown PS5 Upgrade

The only reason I have an inkling about this in the first place is that my instinct is screaming that RDR2‘s PS Plus release could be mirroring RDR1‘s PS Plus launch at the end of 2025. The John Marston-led chapter came to PS Plus on December 2 last year, and the official RDR1 PS5 upgrade launched alongside it. Also, the RDR1 PS5 physical copy was released earlier this month, which could be Rockstar casually trying to fan the hype flames.

While this doesn’t completely confirm an official RDR2 PS5 upgrade, it does make it seem like a far more realistic possibility at the moment. It wouldn’t really make much sense for Rockstar to put the time and effort into enhancing RDR1 if the developer wasn’t intending on doing the same with RDR2. The best way for Rockstar to fully capitalize on the current gen hardware when it comes to the Red Dead series is by upgrading and making a port for both games.

RDR2 is without a doubt the biggest title coming to PS Plus in May, and bringing it to the service now feels like it’s following the lead that RDR1 started. To add more fuel to the fire, there is also a new Red Dead Online event currently underway until June 1. RDR1‘s physical PS5 version, RDR2 coming to PS Plus, and Red Dead Online‘s new event are making everything feel like a perfect storm ahead of a big announcement.

A Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 Version Would Be the Cherry

It’s no secret that GTA 6 is on a lot of people’s minds, especially right now. Take-Two Interactive’s next earnings call is scheduled for May 21. If there’s a window of time that’s likely to have a big GTA 6 update, it’s sometime around this upcoming company meeting. Just recently, GTA 6‘s pre-order date was allegedly leaked, adding more weight to the suspicion that the long-awaited Trailer 3 and further updates are imminent.

Throwing an RDR2 current-gen port into the mix would be a huge double dose of excitement. The GTA 6 release is going to be a major moment for Rockstar and the entire industry, and bringing RDR2 back to share a little bit of the spotlight would be a cool move on the developer’s part. It’s very possible that RDR2 on PS Plus could be a small appetizer for gamers who are either new to Rockstar games or simply want to return for another playthrough to prepare for GTA 6. Only time will tell, but it’s going to be exciting to see how the next few days and weeks surrounding Take-Two Interactive’s earnings call unfold.
