Space Marine 2's Worst DLC Is Now Free For Everyone

Focus Entertainment has confirmed that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2‘s controversial $5 voice pack DLC will be free for all players going forward. As a gesture of goodwill, the publisher has also stated that those who purchased this Space Marine 2 add-on will be provided a full refund in the near future.

Back in February, Space Marine 2 released a voice pack that claimed to re-record 450 lines of dialogue. However, there were many issues with this. Default voices would still play in certain situations, which was extremely jarring. There was no helmet filter option for the voice lines, either. On top of it all, the 450 re-recorded voice lines counted duplicate dialogue across all languages, so there was much less content than buyers were expecting. Space Marine 2 fans were quick to voice their frustrations about the voice pack, and publisher Focus Entertainment has finally responded.

In a post on X, publisher Focus Entertainment addressed the criticism aimed at Space Marine 2‘s $5 voice pack. It said that the DLC “has failed to meet your expectations and we are sorry about that.” After, it reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality content in the third-person shooter to players as a priority. As an apology to players for missing the mark, it stated that it would “offer a refund to all owners of the DLC,” which it is currently working on with platform owners. It’s unclear when owners can expect to receive this refund. The DLC will be completely free on all platforms from now on.

Steam reviews for the voice pack still sit at “Overwhelmingly Negative,” with just 17% of reviews being positive. The DLC was rapidly review-bombed by players, and even in the wake of this latest announcement, it’s difficult to see a scenario where it could turn these rerviews around. It is called “Chapter Voice Pack 1,” which suggests there could be more voice packs in the future. It will be interesting to see whether future voice packs are paid (and higher quality) or whether Saber and Focus keep them free going forward.

Space Marine 2’s post-launch support has largely been very good, and players have received most of the content well. While Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment may have missed the mark with that particular piece of content, it’s good that it has remained accountable and quickly made it up to players. Space Marine 2‘s 12.0 update rolled out last month, bringing a significant amount of new content to the game, which is the sort of thing players want to see more of in the future.

Although developer Saber Interactive continues to support Space Marine 2, it’s difficult not to have one eye on the future of the franchise. Just six months after Space Marine 2‘s very successful launch, Focus Entertainment confirmed that Space Marine 3 was already in development. Considering players had to wait 13 years between the first and second games in the series, news of a sequel came as a massive surprise. It was arguably too early, and the publisher hasn’t spoken about the sequel since. That hasn’t stopped a strong level of post-launch support for Space Marine 2, which was the initial concern for many when the third game was announced.
