Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2 is finally out on June 25, and reviews have already started pouring in, with many outlets praising the remake for its graphics and gameplay improvements. Nintendo’s Star Fox continues the company’s hot streak of remakes ahead of this fall’s potentially massive Ocarina of Time remake.
Nintendo revealed Star Fox for the Switch 2 in May 2026, with a quick release just over a month later, slated for June 25. Fan response to the announcement was generally positive; however, the game has been the subject of some controversy regarding the new hyperrealistic character designs, to the point that even Star Fox‘s original character designer had to get involved. That said, Nintendo’s remake streak is pretty good, with games like Link’s Awakening and Super Mario RPG being huge critical hits, with fans now getting to see if Star Fox follows suit.
Star Fox Reveals Cheaper Price Point, But There’s a Catch
Nintendo reveals the new Star Fox remake will have a lower-than-normal price, but not every version of the game offers the same deal.
Star Fox Impresses Critics With Great Graphics and Improvements to the N64 Original
Ahead of Star Fox‘s June 25 release date, the game’s review embargo has been lifted, and so far, Metacritic shows a pretty great response from several gaming outlets regarding almost every aspect of the game. Star Fox currently holds an 81 “Generally Favorable” score on Metacritic, while OpenCritic has it sitting at an 82 overall with 92% critic-recommended rating. Some of the highest reviews from outlets like ShackNews and CGMagazine praise the game for its excellent visuals and dedication to the source material while also improving multiple aspects of the gameplay for a new audience. Some outlets even state that Star Fox should be the “blueprint” for Nintendo’s future remakes.

ShackNews (Asif Khan) – Score: 10/10
Nintendo Switch 2 has a summer blockbuster experience that faithfully honors its source material while introducing Star Fox to a new generation.
Vooks (Daniel Vuckovic) – Score: 10/10
Star Fox is the blueprint for how Nintendo need to do remakes going forward. This is Star Fox for those who’ve been there from the start, and those starting here for the first time. Star Fox 64 is iconic, but this is now the definitive way to experience it.
Game Informer (Kyle Hilliard) – Score 8.3/10
This Switch 2 remake is a joyful, updated reminder of why the 1997 game is, in fact, very good and fun, but it also casts a spotlight on the fact that we are long overdue for something – frankly, anything – new from Star Fox and team.
Polygon (Giovanni Colantonio) – No Official Score
Star Fox is another good excuse to revisit one of Nintendo’s best games, but it doesn’t meaningfully build on it. Fox McCloud is left in the same stasis he’s been in for decades now: surviving the Lylat Wars to show that he can walk in his father’s footsteps. I get it. How many more times will he have to prove he’s his own fox before he’s allowed to fight his own battles? Give his future cubs a war story that’s worth feeling insecure about.
TechRadar (Dashiell Wood) – Score: 7/10
Star Fox is a solid remake of an excellent game, maintaining everything that made the original a cult classic while sprucing it up with a new lick of paint. Still, it feels overpriced given the campaign’s short length and the unfortunate lack of new content aside from the decently enjoyable, albeit rather threadbare, multiplayer mode.
However, not all reviews are exceedingly positive. Polygon’s Star Fox review states that the enhanced “cinema” feel of the remake doesn’t do much to improve or diminish the overall experience, and sometimes even takes away some of the original game’s playfulness in favor of a gritty feel. Meanwhile, CNET’s review wishes there was more to Star Fox than what was delivered, whether it be new levels or new worlds, instead of it being a fairly straightforward port with new visuals and some gameplay improvements. As a whole, though, Star Fox is a hit with most critics, even if it feels like it could have gone the extra mile with additional features. Fans should note that Star Fox launches at midnight on June 25, but those on the West Coast can play on June 24 since it’s a global release.
With Star Fox, Nintendo has hit another remake home run, but it does rank slightly lower on the company’s recent remake list. Link’s Awakening currently holds the crown at an 87 overall on Metacritic, while Super Mario RPG holds an 84. That said, an 81 is a great score, and it’s likely that any fan of Star Fox will want to pick this one up. Hopefully, if all goes well, this will give Nintendo the green light for even more Star Fox projects.
Of course, there is the looming mother of all Nintendo remakes coming later this year with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. So far, fans haven’t seen much of the game beyond a bit of CG from the trailer, but that hasn’t stopped similar Star Fox discourse seeping into Ocarina of Time, with discussions about redesigns of iconic items and characters. As fans lock in for Star Fox and Nintendo gears up for Ocarina of Time, Nintendo fans will have to wait and see what a remade version of Link’s most famous adventure looks like later this year.
