The PlayStation 6 May Not Release Until 2029, According to New Report

The PlayStation 6 May Not Release Until 2029, According to New Report

Those looking forward to the next-generation PlayStation console, which will likely be called the PS6, may have to wait a little longer than expected. According to a new report, the ongoing RAM crisis, fueled by the continued growth of AI, will likely delay the PlayStation 6 to 2028 or possibly 2029. This is just the latest source to speculate on a release date delay for PlayStation’s next console, as it begins to look increasingly likely that the PlayStation 5 will be here to stay for a few more years.

Sony hasn’t said much about the PlayStation 6 in an official capacity, but Sony’s lead console architect, Mark Cerny, did hint at a potential release window for the PS6 late last year. During a sit-down with AMD’s senior vice president, Jack Huynh, Cerny revealed that the next generation of PlayStation will be released “in a few years’ time.” Given that this was said in the back end of 2025, many speculated that this meant the PS6 would release in late 2028. Unfortunately, this was prior to a surge in RAM prices, which appears to be having a serious effect on the development of new consoles.

February 17 is Going to Be a Super Busy Day for PlayStation Plus

PlayStation Plus subscribers should be sure to circle February 17 on their calendars, as it’s set to be a particularly busy day for the service.

Ongoing RAM Crisis May Delay PS6 to 2029

According to a Bloomberg report on the recent chip shortage driven by rising RAM demand, the highly anticipated PlayStation 6 may not arrive until as late as 2029. The outlet claims that Sony is considering pushing back the console’s release date to 2028 or 2029. If true, this would be the longest gap between PlayStation consoles ever, as the company usually releases new hardware every 6 or 7 years. The PS4 was released in North America in 2013, followed by its successor, the PS5, in November 2020. Should the PS6 launch as late as 2029, this would mean the PS5’s lifecycle would be an unprecedented 9 years, something the company has never done before.

This isn’t the first time that rumors of a 2028 or 2029 release date for the PS6 have been rumored. Earlier this year, an industry analyst at MST Financial released a new report regarding Sony’s Q3 performance and potential future. In the report, the analyst speculated that the next PlayStation console is likely to be “delayed longer than many expected. Although there was no mention of a potential release window for the PS6, many took this as a 2028 or 2029 release, which would align with other reports from trusted sources.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only bad news from Bloomberg’s report: the outlet also claims Nintendo is considering raising the Switch 2’s price due to the ongoing RAM crisis. For those who may be unaware, the price of RAM has skyrocketed in recent months, and it’s all due to the rising popularity of AI. The data centers used to power AI require tons of RAM, which is not only making it more difficult for PC enthusiasts to upgrade their rigs, but it’s also causing issues for bigger companies like Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation. Although Nintendo recently insisted it wouldn’t be raising the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 anytime soon, Bloomberg says that the company is now considering a price hike for its newest console, possibly before the end of 2026.

So, it looks like the PlayStation 5 could be here to stay a little longer than expected. The good news is that there are tons of new games coming to the console in the coming weeks, months, and years that should keep users occupied until more official news on the PS6 is shared. A recent State of Play event had some huge reveals for PlayStation fans, including a sequel to Kena: Bridge of Spirits, a new John Wick game from Saber Interactive, and the announcement that Santa Monica Studios is now working on a remake of the original God of War Trilogy. If that wasn’t already enough, the studio also shadow-dropped a brand-new God of War game for the PS5.
