Zelda: Twilight Princess is Getting an Unofficial Port to an Unexpected Platform

Zelda: Twilight Princess is Getting an Unofficial Port to an Unexpected Platform

The much-loved Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is receiving an unofficial PC port in the near future, thanks to a decompiling effort. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was released back in 2006 for the Nintendo GameCube and as a launch game for the Nintendo Wii. The title saw instant success and became the best-selling game in the franchise at the time, thanks in a large part to the darker and more mature style being what many fans originally wanted from Wind Waker. This success ultimately led to the game receiving an HD remaster for the Wii U, which fans have wanted to see make its way to the Switch.

Given the Zelda franchise’s incredible 40-year history, there have inevitably been various official ports, remasters, and remakes over the years. These include the Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD remasters for the Wii U, the 3DS remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, and Link’s Awakening and Skyward Sword HD for the Switch. It has been several years since the series received a remake or remaster, leaving some fans to take matters into their own hands, with Ocarina of Time receiving an unofficial PC port, shortly followed by Majora’s Mask and A Link to the Past. These ports are achieved through reverse engineering and decompiling the code of the game, and thanks to recent developments, Twilight Princess seems to be the next for this treatment.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time Port Brings It to an Unexpected Console

Nearly 30 years after Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s release on Nintendo 64, a port of the game is now available on a surprising platform.

A Twilight Princess PC Port is Being Developed

In a recent video by the YouTube Channel Video Game Esoterica, a decompiled version of Twilight Princess was shown off. The footage is from a work-in-progress build of the game, currently undergoing bug testing and feedback phases before going public. This unofficial project would be pivotal in revitalizing Twilight Princess, allowing for mods, uncapped frame rates, randomizers, fixes for glitches, and so much more. Decompiling the game’s code and creating a native PC version will provide a much smoother and better-optimized experience than emulation, along with enabling support for various modern systems. Although an official copy of Twilight Princess will be needed to play the upcoming release, it may be a temporary solution for the Zelda fans begging Nintendo to make Switch ports.

This video seems to have excited fans of the franchise, with various comments stating how Twilight Princess is the best entry in the series or that it will greatly benefit from this upcoming PC version. The game is a crucial entry for Zelda fans to play, containing some of the series’ most-loved dungeons and story moments. A time frame for the port’s release will likely be around several months if it follows the trend of previous entries. The Ocarina of Time PC port saw a four-month gap between decompilation and release, while Majora’s Mask took six months.

A PC port of Twilight Princess, specifically a decompilation, will be extremely beneficial for the title in various ways. It will provide more accessibility for fans who don’t own any of the hardware it’s currently on, allow for more in-depth changes than emulation could ever provide, as well as opening the door for modders and fans to create new content for the game. Add in the fact that the franchise’s previous PC versions still receive consistent updates from the community, and things are looking bright for the latest Zelda PC project. It’s unclear if Zelda will receive a game for its 40th anniversary, but this unofficial port of Twilight Princess may just prove the best alternative for fans.
