While Helldivers 2 was a truly massive game for the first year of its life, it has struggled a bit to keep players invested long-term. Other great video games pulling players away is a factor every successful title has to deal with, though some controversial balancing decisions and content droughts have also contributed to a lot of Helldivers 2 fans moving on. If you’re one of the players who stepped away from Super Earth, or is considering doing so, a new co-op PvE game to play with your friends is surely a must. Steam’s Wardens of Avalon might just be that game, though it’s important to note how different its setting is from Arrowhead’s big hit.
While there are other games with Helldivers vibes on Steam, Wardens of Avalon stands out because it trades out the expected sci-fi setting for something that better resembles Kingdom Come. Obviously, there’s very little in common between a slow-paced immersive RPG and the hectic combat of Helldivers, so Wardens of Avalon certainly has a greater portion of Helldivers in its DNA than Kingdom Come. Still, becoming a knight alongside one’s friends to defeat demonic foes in a twisted version of Camelot is a bold concept that a wide range of gamers can enjoy, with its camera perspective and enemies even allowing Diablo fans to get in on the hype.

Wardens of Avalon Merges Helldivers Co-Op Freedom With Kingdom Come’s Sense of Duty
While Wardens of Avalon’s top-down camera perspective means it resembles the original Helldivers more than its sequel from a visual standpoint, the freedom will undoubtedly feel familiar to fans of the more recent entry. Much like Helldivers 2 players can choose from a wide range of Strategems and weapons to shake up their approaches to combat, Wardens of Avalon pushes you to experiment. Instead of a class structure like other games, you are free to change your build depending on what certain situations call for. While dodging and parrying are always present, you can gamble with things like risk/reward corruption stats while also altering your weapons and armor using seals that “better suit your playstyle.”
The entirety of Wardens of Avalon will be playable solo, but it’s also sure to be more enjoyable in four-player co-op, with players forming their own order of knights alongside their friends. While this take on a clan system could be just for show, the game does go out of its way to represent a knight’s duty, which is where the Kingdom Come parallels are felt the most. Sure, the moment-to-moment gameplay will have players slicing through demons just like they would in Diablo, or see the screen covered in so much chaos it looks like an Orbital Laser was just called in, but it’s the quieter moments between quests that could make the game feel special.
As you clear the threat from the lands of Camelot, you’ll gather resources which can then be used to restore the kingdom. You’ll rebuild structures piece by piece, and as the corruption’s presence begins to fade, new opportunities will be unlocked. This includes quests, but more importantly, various vendors that offer different ways to upgrade one’s Twilight Knight. Apothecaries, druids, blacksmiths, and herborists are just four of the potential salespeople listed, and unlocking access to them by bringing glory back to a ruined kingdom should feel immensely satisfying. While Helldivers fans will have a blast fighting enemy groups alongside their friends, Kingdom Come enjoyers will appreciate having a hand in the rebuilding process.

Wardens of Avalon’s Bosses Are Icing on the Cake
While it remains to be seen how mechanically complex the boss battles in this medieval Steam game are, narratively they have a ton of potential. Since the Knights of the Round Table are corrupt just like the rest of Camelot, it can be assumed that they’ll serve as the major bosses of the game. For fans of the King Arthur lore, battling a corrupt version of the legendary figure will undoubtedly be memorable. A fight against a demonic Merlin could be an ideal final boss, too, as he’d have access to a wide range of magic that could allow for a ton of attacks. With so much going for it, Wardens of Avalon is a game worth keeping an eye on as 2027 looms closer.
