Gamer’s Mom Draws Pokemon Based Only on Their Descriptions

Gamer’s Mom Draws Pokemon Based Only on Their Descriptions

A gamer’s talented mom is drawing as many designs from the Pokemon series as possible. The catch is that they don’t know anything about Pokemon, and must only draw each design using the description provided on Bulbapedia, producing some great results despite this massive limitation.

The Pokemon franchise is officially 30 years old as of this year. Over the years, fans have paid tribute to the franchise in unique and interesting ways, often utilizing their own talents to bring Pokemon designs to life. Some simply recreate existing ones, while others choose to put their own fresh spin on things. Because each new Pokemon Generation comes with tons of new designs, fans are never short on fresh inspiration, even if some of the older Generations are more popular due to their longevity.

An auction for an incredibly rare Pokemon card closes, and the seller earns a small fortune, with a winning bid of over $1,400,000.

Pokemon Fan’s Mom Draws Designs Using Only Bulbapedia Descriptions

Instagram account pok.emum is run by a Pokemon fan whose mother loves to draw, but knows nothing about the franchise herself. She has been challenged to draw as many Pokemon designs as possible without looking at them, basing her artwork only on the descriptions provided on Bulbapedia. This gamer’s mom is a talented artist in her own right, so it’s very cool to see how she interprets each Pokemon, with the Bulbapedia description provided alongside each post. The original user also provides their own notes on the differences between their mom’s artwork and the original design, providing some fun insight into how the variations in each Pokemon came to be. It’s unclear how Pokemon are selected to get the pok.emum treatment, with 228 designs in total at the time of writing.

Considering she doesn’t know anything about these Pokemon, some of the artwork is very similar to the original. Designs like Dugtrio and Ditto do a great job of capturing the respective Pokemon, and because they are quite simple, it makes sense. There’s very little in the description to lead pok.emum astray, which is not the case when it comes to the more complex Pokemon designs. Even when the artwork doesn’t look like the original design, she makes it her own, with a capybara-style Pawmi and a very friendly-looking Empoleon among the highlights.

This project started over three years ago, and pok.emum has been producing these pieces of artwork at a rate of around one per week since. Despite this, the art style for the Pokemon has remained consistent throughout, and it will be interesting to see if she will tackle any of the upcoming Generation 10 designs in Pokemon Winds and Waves.

As the Pokemon franchise continues to grow in popularity, fans have a lot to look forward to over the next year. Continued support for existing games such as Pokemon Go and Pokemon TCG Pocket is one aspect, as is any potential post-launch support for the critically-acclaimed Pokopia. As well as this, the launch of Pokemon Winds and Waves in 2027 will mark the start of Generation 10, a landmark moment for the long-running franchise.
