Ace Combat 8 Just Proved Arcade Flight Games Aren’t Going Anywhere

Ace Combat 8 Just Proved Arcade Flight Games Aren’t Going Anywhere

Bandai Namco has announced that Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has already sold one million copies worldwide roughly a week after its October 2 launch. That makes it the fastest-selling entry in the franchise’s 30-year history, and though that may shock those outside this genre’s sphere of influence, it’s pretty easy to understand for those who have played it. Arcade flight may often be treated as a bit of a relic next to its more realistic counterparts and simulators, but Ace Combat 8‘s record start is a solid piece of proof that this style of aerial combat isn’t going anywhere.

Of course, when most people picture a modern aviation game, they likely think of something like Microsoft Flight Simulator or DCS World, where the authenticity on offer is the main draw. Those games have earned their reputations, to be sure, and I’d wager the simulation scene is as healthy as it’s ever been. But a million players rushing to buy a game about pulling physics-defying maneuvers amid a cacophony of beautifully melodramatic character dialogue suggests there are different kinds of pilots out there, and that’s good news for all parties involved.

Ace Combat 8’s Record Launch Makes Sense

Though Wings of Theve’s predecessor, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, is still the best-selling game in the series by a wide margin, with 7.5 million units sold since its 2019 release, it’s worth noting it got there slowly. That game took well over a year to reach two million sales; Ace Combat 8 hit half that number in about a week. These new numbers may seem due to a sudden spike in interest, but considering the scale, it becomes clear that the franchise’s main audience has been steadily building for years.

See, Ace Combat 8 is the first mainline entry in the franchise in seven years. That means Ace Combat 7‘s long tail is largely what kept the series in front of new players for a very long time. An interest spike is certainly possible—one could reasonably see how Top Gun: Maverick‘s 2022 success might have nudged a few curious moviegoers toward the genre, even if that effect is hard to measure—but it’s a lot easier to imagine in somewhat of a stasis, the franchise’s reach only compounded.

It’s also easier to imagine because these games are, by and large, very good, and Ace Combat 8 is no different. The title currently sits at an 87 on OpenCritic, making it the second-best-reviewed game in the series, behind only Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies. Brand loyalty alone is one thing, but seeing critics agree like this also does a lot to indicate the series is flying as high as it ever has.

Flight Sims and Arcade Flight Games Serve Different Pilots

I mentioned earlier that this game’s success is good news for every kind of gaming aviator, and I believe that to be true largely because of visibility. For context, flight simulators ask a lot of their players, and that’s their appeal; massive games like DCS World recreate real cockpits switch by switch, and mastering a single aircraft can take dozens of hours, often with a flight stick setup to match. For the players who love them, that steep learning curve is the reward, because the satisfaction comes from conquering a system that mirrors the real thing.

Bandai Namco has announced that Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has already sold one million copies worldwide roughly a week after its October 2 launch.

But given that a learning curve exists, the arcade flight game genre remains critically important, because it makes a completely different promise. Ace Combat uses real-world fighter jets, but it pairs them with simpler controls, absurd missile capacities, and missions built around enormous set pieces that no real pilot would survive. The goal of these games is to feel like the best pilot in the sky within minutes of picking up a controller, and mastery, be it through hours logged or adherence to a flight stick setup, comes later or not at all.

The two styles don’t often compete for the same player; a thriving simulation market and a thriving arcade market can coexist without either coming at the other’s expense, but there’s also a real possibility that one feeds into the other. Ace Combat 8‘s success provides flight sims a simpler starting point for those who may want to try a flight stick or get used to digital aviation. At the same time, it also proves that the arcade side of the hangar isn’t as empty as it may have looked.

Ace Combat’s Spectacle Is a Standalone Achievement

Beyond the more speculative, though, it truly is impressive just how much Ace Combat 8 does for its genre in its own right. There’s a level of polish to its spectacle that comes down to the fact that Bandai Namco understands exactly what kind of game it’s making; earlier this year, brand director Kazutoki Kono described the series as a “hero-making experience,” and it’s hard not to really feel what that means in the moment-to-moment gameplay. There’s a certain fantasy that comes along with an arcade flyer franchise like Ace Combat, and it’s difficult to replicate anywhere else beyond the genre.

Arcade Flight Games Are Here to Stay

Ace Combat 8‘s success largely comes down to how much further it leans into that identity of hero-making. It helps, too, that it brings back long-dormant features like wingman commands and aircraft customization, while also delivering the series’ most expansive multiplayer offering yet, including its first online lobby. None of these additions to Ace Combat 8 make the game more realistic, and while it may set some players down that path, it’s perfectly fine—even celebrated—that the more magical realism remains pointed.

And celebration is the right call, because a success like Ace Combat 8 is tricky, especially when the perception is often that modern aviation games focused on realism have replaced arcade flight games, as if it were a natural progression for a niche holdover from an earlier era. In fact, the way that Ace Combat 8 makes that assumption hard to defend might be its greatest triumph outside of gameplay. If others like it can successfully build on that triumph, watching the genre reach even greater speeds will be a real treat.
