Body Harvest, the open-world action-adventure N64 game by GTA developer DMA Design, has officially returned with a surprise new release after 28 years. This recent release gives fans the opportunity to replay the classic Nintendo 64 title, just as they remembered back in 1998.

Body Harvest was originally released by DMA Design in October 1998. The studio had released Grand Theft Auto one year prior, and would later go on to be rebranded as Rockstar North. While Body Harvest was originally met with fairly average reviews, the legacy that Rockstar North would then go on to create makes it a uniquely-placed piece of gaming history.

ModRetro has officially released a brand-new physical version of Body Harvest as part of its Classics Collection. Priced at $49.99, the new release is compatible with both the original Nintendo 64 (NTSC only) and ModRetro’s own M64, and even supports the Rumble Pak accessory. It comes complete with an instruction manual, too, making this a properly retro-style release. On ModRetro, Body Harvest has 4.9/5 reviews from those who have picked it up already, making it a popular choice for retro game fans.

In many ways, Body Harvest has some of Grand Theft Auto‘s DNA. Players drive over 60 vehicles, from civilian cars to military tanks, with non-linear freedom to explore the game’s various open-world environments. However, it differentiates itself in a few interesting ways. The core concept is based on time-travel, allowing players to head to various time periods and explore completely different environments, fighting off aliens along the way.

Earth is dead. Humanity has been hunted to near-extinction by a century of alien attacks. Step into a prototype time machine, travel back through a century of Earth history, and destroy the alien predators before they can complete their hideous body harvest.

Body Harvest Key Features

  • Travel open-world environments from across the globe across various time periods
  • Third-person gameplay
  • Drive/fly over 60 different vehicles
  • Tackle objectives in different orders with non-linear freedom
  • Physical copy comes with instruction manual
  • Compatible with N64 and M64

It’s fun to see the variety of games that ModRetro has released so far. Just prior to Body Harvest, it launched a re-release of ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut, which has long been considered as one of the rarest N64 games of all time. The approach has been very interesting, focusing more on cult classics more than the games that would perhaps be more obvious candidates for re-releases.

Thanks to its M64 and Chromatic consoles, ModRetro is spearheading a resurgence in retro gaming. The company has made it easier for gamers not just to play their old N64 titles, but to purchase new ones, with re-releases of classic titles and even some brand-new games along the way. Many will continue to emulate older titles, but for those who prefer something physical, there’s no doubt that ModRetro is changing the game at the moment.
