An ambitious team of modders is creating a full-fledged multiplayer mod for Kingdom Hearts 3, allowing players to team up with up to three friends. The Kingdom Hearts 3 mod shows off four different playable characters from the game’s cast to choose from.

The most recent Kingdom Hearts game was a groundbreaking entry for the franchise in multiple ways. Kingdom Hearts 3‘s launch in 2019 marked the first time the franchise had released a new main-series game in more than a decade, with multiple spin-offs released after Kingdom Hearts 2. KH3 also concluded the Dark Seeker Saga story arc, which served as the Kingdom Hearts franchise’s main plotline since the original game debuted in 2002. Now, a group of Kingdom Hearts 3 modders is aiming to add multiplayer gameplay to the franchise’s third main entry.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Mod Adds Multiplayer Gameplay

A new mod project, titled KH 3 Re: Multiplayer, is showing off stunning multiplayer combat within Kingdom Hearts 3. The video begins with a three-player team of Sora, Riku, and Kairi battling against Darkside in the Dark Margin, with Aqua later joining in to fight against the Demon Tide. The mod uses split-screen gameplay in order to accommodate multiple perspectives, with up to four players being supported on one screen. The announcement from the mod team does not specify a release date or whether the characters shown will be the only available options, with Roxas also playable in Kingdom Hearts 3‘s Re Mind DLC.

The Kingdom Hearts 3 mod, while ambitious, has raised some concerns among fans about the potential game balance implications. Kingdom Hearts 3 was intended as a single-player RPG with one player-controlled character battling alongside AI-controlled teammates, with multiple playable characters potentially making the game too easy. The three-player battle against Darkside lasts for just over three minutes using the mod, while the four-player Demon Tide fight takes less than two minutes to clear.

Kingdom Hearts has toyed with the concept of multiplayer gameplay previously in the RPG series, though typically as side content. Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days was the first game in the franchise to experiment with multiplayer content, allowing players to take control of different Organization 13 members to tackle various challenges. Birth By Sleep similarly added multiplayer capability to the gauntlet-style Mirage Arena, pitting players against waves of increasingly powerful enemies. Mobile-exclusive spin-off Kingdom Hearts X also featured multiplayer raids, supporting up to six players.
