After more than 17 years, Minecraft has officially raised the minimum and recommended PC specifications for Java Edition, requiring more RAM and newer hardware. Mojang’s enduring Minecraft has accumulated years of technical changes, graphical improvements, and new features across almost two decades of continued support.
As simplistic as Minecraft can be, it has often been perceived as a particularly undemanding game because of its block-based visuals and long history of running on modest computers ever since it launched in 2009. However, Minecraft‘s Java Edition has grown more technically complex throughout the years as world generation has expanded, simulation demands have grown, new mobs have been added, and the engine continues to modernize. This original version has grown so much that, compared to the Bedrock Edition, Java is considered more resource-intensive but also more mod-friendly. Mojang has now updated Java Edition’s hardware requirements with target resolutions, frame rates, and graphics presets.

As of July 21, 2026, Mojang uploaded a blog post detailing Minecraft‘s new system requirements, targeting 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second using the Fancy graphics preset for its “Recommended” configuration, while the “Minimum” spec targets 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings. To hit the recommended spec, players on PC will need 16GB of system memory and a processor comparable to an Intel Core i5-12400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600, with a GPU equal to an RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT. Although modest by today’s AAA game standards, Minecraft‘s revised PC requirements are a pretty significant step up from its previous specs, but it isn’t particularly surprising after 17 years of service and changes.

The minimum standard is still fairly reasonable, requiring a basic four-core processor and a minimum of 8GB of memory if using a discrete GPU, but it does boost the RAM totals overall compared to previous hardware specs. Mojang states that computers below the revised minimum requirements may still launch Java Edition, but the studio no longer guarantees proper performance or visual quality, noting that fans could experience low frame rates and longer loading times. As Minecraft just launched Vibrant Visuals, some of these changes start to make sense.
Minecraft‘s new system requirements are also partly due to Mojang’s ongoing transition from OpenGL to Vulkan rendering in favor of new graphics. Java Edition has used OpenGL since the beginning, but the studio says the older graphics API has become increasingly difficult to maintain and modernize, while Vulkan could boost graphical capabilities and strengthen Minecraft’s graphical foundation. Consequently, fans will notice that the new minimums require Vulkan 1.3 compatibility by default, and some GPUs over 10 years old may lack proper support for the API.
Most players currently running Minecraft on Java without problems will probably not notice any immediate difference, but in case there is a problem, Bedrock is still there as an alternative. The greater concern for fans with older hardware will likely be long-term compatibility as Mojang expands Vulkan usage across Minecraft, potentially locking out some users who don’t have a GPU capable of using the renderer. However, the biggest benefit of the new hardware specifications may be that fans now have actual resolution and frame rate targets to help buyers understand what PC they need to run the game. Minecraft may still look like the accessible block-building game that launched more than 17 years ago, but its new PC requirements show that the technology supporting those blocks has become considerably more demanding.
