Players have to jump through a lot of hoops to obtain all 1,025 Pokemon, and Pokemon GO has become the definitive game for players that want to come as close as possible. When Pokemon GO was released in 2016, the game started by focusing on the original generation that began with Pokemon Red and Green. Over the last 10 years, the developers at Niantic gradually started to add Pokemon from every other generation.
Since 2020, Pokemon Home users can transfer Pokemon caught in Pokemon GO. For those that missed many of the earlier games in the series, or simply can’t afford to buy every new game on Switch, the feature has become a viable way of completing the National Dex. It has also given players a way to bring their prized Pokemon from the mobile game into titles like Scarlet and Violet.

Which Pokemon Game Has the Most Available Pokemon?
A few years ago, Pokemon GO surpassed Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the game with the most Pokemon available to catch. Right now, Pokemon GO has 950 Pokemon that can be obtained, far exceeding Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon‘s record of 807. That leaves just 75 left for Niantic to add before every single Pokemon becomes available in Pokemon GO. However, it’s worth noting that there are some caveats to that fact.

While it’s technically true that Pokemon GO has the most Pokemon available to catch in any game, their availability is constantly fluctuating. New Pokemon are usually added to the game during specific timed events, and some are exclusively available through egg hatching, Raids, or Special Research. Pokemon GO also makes some Pokemon exclusive to specific biomes, and even real-world regions and countries. On the flip side, if a Pokemon is available in a mainline game like Pokemon Legends: Z-A, players usually have a lot more freedom to catch it at their leisure.
Fortunately, Pokemon GO players should have more opportunities to catch a lot of different Pokemon this summer. Pokemon GO Fest 2026 is promising the most diverse amount of Pokemon ever seen in the wild. That should help players fill in a lot of missing gaps in their Pokedex, as they try to get closer to the 950 currently available in the game. It’s worth noting that, while there are just 75 Pokemon left for Niantic to add, that number will be increasing sometime in 2027. Pokemon Winds and Waves have already revealed three new Pokemon, and players can expect several more when the games come to Nintendo Switch 2. Niantic also still has plenty of Mega Evolutions to add, thanks to the new ones introduced in Pokemon Legends: Z-A last year.
At this point, it’s unlikely that another game will come along and dethrone Pokemon GO‘s spot as the one with the most catchable Pokemon. Game Freak moved away from the National Dex with the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield, which remains one of the biggest controversies the franchise has ever seen. Unless there’s a decision to shift back with the launch of Pokemon Winds and Waves, it seems Pokemon GO will continue to maintain the record.
