Pokemon Leak Gives a Glimpse of Cut Magikarp and Gyarados Forms in Scarlet and Violet

Pokemon Leak Gives a Glimpse of Cut Magikarp and Gyarados Forms in Scarlet and Violet

A beta version of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet surfaced online, with more information about the cut convergent forms for both Magikarp and Gyarados leaked early before the games came out. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet saw perhaps the biggest leak season before launch compared to any previous game, to the point that the entire Pokedex with images appeared online. Even the many leaks for Pokemon Winds and Waves from the TeraLeak are not on par with Gen 9, as everything of note was leaked before release, including a playable ROM.

Now that Pokemon Winds and Waves will launch in late 2027 and thrust the series into a new era, it’s only natural to wonder what will happen to some scrapped concepts over the years. In particular, it was leaked that “regional fakes” of Magikarp and Gyarados were cut ahead of Gen 9’s release in favor of Toedscool and Toedscruel. These forms have been wrapped up in mystery ever since, but a newly leaked beta version of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet finally provides some answers.

Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Map Leaks Online

Basically Pokemon Winds and Waves’ entire region has leaked online, with fans piecing together new places in the Gen 10 region.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Cut Magikarp and Gyarados Forms Leak Online

Twitter/X user IcyBoi33 shared a post with screenshots from the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet beta showing what seems to be early Pokedex placeholders for the cut Magikarp and Gyarados forms in Gen 9. Here, both Pokemon are listed as Dragon-type, which is an interesting detail for many reasons. First off, many fans have asked for Dragon-type Gyarados over the years, maybe as a new Mega Evolution or regional form, and these cut designs were very close to delivering exactly that.

Another thing to note is that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s Pokedex didn’t include any new pure Dragon-type Pokemon, which the convergent Magikarp and Gyarados would have been. These would have been land Pokemon, too, so maybe their designs had legs. Perhaps more interesting still is that the leaked Magikarp and Gyarados forms don’t follow the same rules as the convergent species introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

In fact, both Wiglett and Wugtrio are pure Water-type Pokemon, with Water being opposite Ground of the original Diglett and Dugtrio in terms of the type chart. Ground-type Pokemon are weak to Water, Grass, and Ice, so for Wiglett and Wugtrio to be Water-types, it doesn’t seem like a coincidence. This is reinforced further with Toedscool and Toedscruel, which are Ground/Grass. The original Tentacool and Tentacruel are Water/Poison, with these types being respectively weak to Grass and Electric, or Ground and Psychic. This once again points to a deliberate type choice with these convergent Pokemon, as opposed to making their type dependent on the design — it seems that the opposite might be true.

With a Dragon-type Magikarp and Gyarados, things would have been different. While Dragon-type Pokemon resist Water, they have no connection to Flying, which is Gyarados’ secondary type. It’s unclear if the cut Magikarp and Gyarados will find their way into Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ region, but they would most likely be a welcome addition. As for their type, it would be interesting to see convergent species that don’t follow the rules of the two currently available, and it would be equally interesting to see if they were to be introduced with different types as pure Dragon.
