After the final round of previews for Marvel’s Wolverine, the director of community and marketing at Insomniac has some choice words for social media algorithms and the “relentless onslaught” of negativity. The next major game from Insomniac is now less than a month away and while anticipation remains high with the community and even recent previews for Marvel’s Wolverine, it seems that some negativity online is being amplified to levels beyond what is actually representative.
After giving fans a brand-new look at Marvel’s Wolverine during Sony’s State of Play back in June, there’s been plenty of excitement from the community. Insomniac seems to have hit all the major elements associated with Wolverine from his brutal and visceral combat, ability to regenerate, as well as adding in some of his biggest allies and rivals like Jean Grey and Sabretooth. While much of the discussion online seems to be of excitement and anticipation, it hasn’t stopped some of the negativity from rising to the surface.
In a new post on social media by James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, the Marvel’s Wolverine dev remarked on how surprising it was to see how social media algorithms amplified and seemingly pushed negativity upon people. Calling it a “relentless onslaught,” Stevenson admitted it has pushed him to reconsider his stance on having other developers post there. In fact, he was left wondering how it could be good for anyone’s mental health or even representative of how things really are.
Stevenson did receive some support online, with fans reiterating that they hope the constant wave of negativity doesn’t push members of the studio to stop posting for those that do want to get news and updates. Stevenson’s reply made it seem as if he wasn’t sure if enduring the constant barrage of negativity was ultimately worth it, leaving it up to those to perhaps just post and not reply or maybe even just move to a different platform entirely.

While Stevenson didn’t get into specifics, the post could likely be directly linked to another trending topic that occurred just a few days prior. Recent preview events for Marvel’s Wolverine showcased new areas of the game, including a boss fight against a Sentinel. Some people online compared the Marvel’s Wolverine boss to that of Ben 10: Protector of Earth, a 2007 beat-em up. Essentially, the boss fight follows what can be considered a predictable formula where players dodge a fist slam attack and then damage the enemy, seemingly repeating until the fight is over.
Insomniac has also confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine is a linear game, ditching the open world elements in the previous Spider-Man games. While it may make more sense to build a linear and more story-driven experience for a character like Wolverine, some have taken the opportunity to criticize certain footage. In particular, there’s one segment where Logan is essentially running after a character in a straight line as explosions and gunfire are taking place around him, leaving those to wonder just how exciting this will be, regardless of how cinematic it looks.
All that aside, the big elephant in the room remains with Sony’s decision to end physical discs in general. While the announcement was almost universally panned by players, they’ve been relentless in continuing to call out Sony online, in community posts, and in nearly every comment section. Insomniac previously confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine would indeed have a physical copy and disc, but that hasn’t stopped fans from negatively calling out Sony and its planned future where ever they can. Still, Insomniac has seemingly earned the benefit of the doubt, with a lengthy track record of positively received games from both players and critics.
