Developer Santa Monica Studio has officially given fans an update regarding the disc status and thus the release date of God of War Laufey, brought on after fans demanded to know. Of course, fans are demanding to know because PlayStation recently announced it was ending the production of physical discs in January 2028 and setting up the PlayStation 6 console to be digital-only.
Indeed, not long ago, PlayStation made its physical disc announcement (and confirmed it was shutting down the PS3/PS Vita PlayStation Stores), and many fans have not been happy at all. From physical collectors to issues with digital ownership, the resulting backlash made the PlayStation Twitter account go quiet for several days, quieter than it’s ever been. While things do seem to be returning to normal, understandably with many still-upset fans, it is still forcing many developers like God of War Laufey‘s Santa Monica to confront the question: “Do you support physical media? Will this game have a physical disc? Will I be able to purchase and own this game?”
God of War Laufey Officially Confirmed for 2027 Release
On July 10, Santa Monica Studio announced there would be a San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) panel for the upcoming GoW game on July 24 at 5:30 PM PT/8:30 PM ET where key figures, listed below, would share behind-the-scenes stories, discuss new characters in God of War Laufey, and so forth. The announcement was foreseeably bombarded with questions regarding the disc status and release date of God of War Laufey, forcing Santa Monica to add, just an hour later, that the studio could confirm God of War Laufey “will be available on disc.”

Ultimately, this confirms God of War Laufey as a 2027 game, even if PlayStation and Santa Monica have largely skirted the subject. Any new games released after January 2028 will not have a disc, giving Santa Monica a hard deadline. Previously, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has suggested that God of War Laufey would be released in early 2027, around February or March. Given that God of War Laufey has been planned for a long time and Santa Monica Studio had a lot to show of it when the company first revealed the game, none of this is particularly surprising.
God of War Laufey SDCC Panelists
- Cory Barlog, Head of Creative
- Ariel Lawrence, Game Director
- Deborah Ann Woll (Faye)
- Christopher Judge (Kratos)
- Jack Quaid (Phranque the Cube)
- Perlina Lau (Rue)
However, it’s worth noting that fans should not necessarily expect hard news about God of War Laufey coming out of the panel. There should be good insights into these characters, befitting the described scope (BTS stories & character focus), but hard video game news does not come out of panels very often. It would be great for there to be a new trailer, announcement, or something going into it, but that remains to be seen.
Of course, God of War Laufey is coming (in physical form) in 2027, so fans should hear me in the coming months. Gamescom 2026 is right around the corner, and if PlayStation isn’t planning some end-of-summer showcase, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn more there.
