One fan of The Sims 4 has shared an in-game story that’s so endearing yet terrifying that it sounds like it could have been lifted out of the plot of a horror movie. There are plenty of unexpected interactions that can happen in The Sims 4, but few players would be ready to face the events that unfolded for one Sim family after a familiar face followed their son home from school.

With The Sims franchise hitting its 25th anniversary last February, there have been plenty of spooky stories told over the series’ run. Some of these tales have been scripted by the development team at Maxis, like the mysterious disappearance and alien abduction of Bella Goth, or have come through mods that bring dangerous events like serial killer visits and zombie apocalypses to the usually cozy life sim. But possibly the scariest and most unusual of all the events are ones that the game has cobbled together all on its own, as is the case in this oddly uplifting tale.

Having kids in The Sims 4 provides a lot of opportunities for immersion, from passing on family genes and legacies to fulfilling many Sims’ lifelong aspirations, but it can also take a dark turn. That was the case for Reddit user Miss_V26, who recently shared a story of one of their Sims children, Ben, asking if he could bring a friend home from school. The invitation was accepted, but the person following the young boy home wasn’t technically alive, and what’s more, he was the ghost of his dead brother, Louis. According to the player, the elder son had died in an accidental fireplace mishap while the younger son was still an infant, and while he hadn’t had time to form real memories of his older brother, the two were still able to establish a strong, if not paranormal, connection at school.

Since the story was first posted, the ghostly tale has taken a much happier turn. First, the player reported that Ben and Louis had become best friends, and that the posthumous first child had even been invited to reside with his family once again. Mere hours after the original post was made, the story then got even more heartwarming, as Ben was restored to life through The Sims 4‘s Ambrosia, a special and hard-to-prepare meal that has many magical properties, including granting the eater external youth or even restoring ghostly Sims to life.

The sudden resurrection of Louis could have some lasting repercussions for the family, however, and it sounds as though it could potentially drive a wedge between the recently reunited brothers. The neighborhood in which their game is taking place is themed around a historical setting, and the current era of the game is set in the 1920s. It sounds as though their family is well-off, and while Louis was the original heir to the family fortune, that honor was passed down to Ben following his death. The player hasn’t clarified if they’re taking advantage of The Sims 4‘s Royalty and Legacy expansion to expand this unusual tale of brotherly rivalry, but for now, the siblings are content to spend time together, enjoying their hobbies of cooking and learning to play the piano.

That’s not even the only tale of a long-lost visitor from school to come out of this thread, and the other didn’t even involve a Sim getting killed. One fellow Sims 4 player reported that one of their child Sims brought home a schoolmate who turned out to be their own triplet, who had previously been seized by Social Services as an infant. Even with 21 full expansions filled with unique characters and content, it goes to show that sometimes, the random nature of The Sims 4 can write even more compelling stories than its official developers or its most dedicated players have planned out.
