Xbox Prices Are Now Officially Much Higher

As of August 1, Xbox Series X/S consoles have just gotten more expensive due to the ongoing DRAM shortage crisis affecting the global economy. The current price hike is the third one that the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S console lineup have undergone since launch, when each system was respectively priced at $499.99 and $299.99.

It’s no secret that the DRAM shortage crisis has caused various tech products to become more expensive since the fall of 2025. The shortage started after a surge in demand from companies building AI-based data centers around the world. Along with RAM kits and solid-state drives, the crisis has affected graphics cards, gaming consoles, and smart devices. Manufacturers such as Lenovo have stated that the RAM crisis is “the new normal” and claimed that the high prices will not change for the foreseeable future.

Months after Microsoft raised the price of Xbox Series X/S consoles in light of the Trump administration’s tariffs, another price hike has now taken hold across three key regions. As reported by VGC, the Xbox Series X/S has officially undergone its third post-launch price hike across the US, the UK, and Europe. The Xbox Series S 512GB model is now $499.99, which is the same price that the Xbox Series X had during its 2020 launch. The 1TB variant of the Xbox Series X got a $150 price bump, from $449.99 to $599.99. By comparison, the Xbox Series X is now over $700 in the US, with the disc-based model now priced at $799.99 and the digital edition at $749.99. All prices are before taxes and fees are applied. The price hikes also affected the UK and various parts of Europe, where the Xbox Series X 1TB disc drive edition now costs £669.99 and €799.99, respectively.

Though Microsoft previously revealed the August 1 Xbox console price hikes in June, the tech giant only showed how much more expensive it would be in US dollars. Ergo, users across Europe and the UK were left to discover the price increases for themselves once August 1 arrived. While previous price hikes on Xbox consoles were the result of tariffs, the August 1 increase was due to the ongoing DRAM shortage crisis that has affected the entire economy.

The crisis has also caused Microsoft to discontinue production of Xbox Series X consoles that included 2TB of system storage due to rising costs. When compared to Sony’s PS5 console lineup, the Xbox Series X disc drive edition is over $150 more expensive than the PS5 slim with a disc drive and 1TB of system storage. Even after the August 1 price changes, the Xbox Series X 1TB disc drive edition is not the most expensive current-gen console on the market. As of this writing, Sony’s PS5 Pro is still $100 more expensive at $899.99.

By comparison, the Xbox Series S 512GB edition will have the same price as the Nintendo Switch 2 once the latter system raises its price on September 1. With console gaming quickly becoming an expensive hobby, it remains to be seen how prices will continue to change as the DRAM shortage crisis rages on.
