Assassin’s Creed Fans Are Flocking Back to a 2018 AC Game

Assassin’s Creed Fans Are Flocking Back to a 2018 AC Game

In the wake of the release (and massive success) of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in cinemas, gamers are flocking back to 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in droves. While not necessarily every Assassin’s Creed fan’s favorite entry in the long-running series, the interest driven by The Odyssey has meant that the game is enjoying another player count burst.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey takes the franchise back to Ancient Greece, in one of the most stunning video game worlds ever created, even eight years later. Even among those who aren’t massive fans of the game, its rendition of Ancient Greece is one area in which most agree it excels. Despite its positives, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey faced some criticism for its RPG elements, which have always proven controversial among long-time fans of the series. This hasn’t stopped the game from increasing in popularity on all platforms over the last few weeks.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: The Differences Between Alexios and Kassandra

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey gives players the choice between Alexios or Kassandra, but there are more differences between them than fans may think.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Gets Huge Engagement Spike After The Odyssey Release

According to Alinea Analytics head of market analysis Rhys Elliott, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has experienced its highest player engagement in years since the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The movie has been in cinemas for over two weeks, and since then, the combined active users have surged from approximately 122,000 to 233,000 on all platforms – a 90% increase in engagement. By platform, Steam picked up 26%, PlayStation 94%, and Xbox 135%, a significant increase across the board for the open-world RPG.

AC Odyssey Battle

According to Elliott, there is an obvious reason why the player count increase on consoles has been so much more significant than on Steam. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is available on Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, which meant that, as Elliott puts it, “curious moviegoers faced zero financial friction to start playing.” On top of this, Ubisoft has leaned into the movie’s release, continuing to re-promote AC Odyssey, particularly its educational Discovery Tour.

This kind of player count increase definitely makes a lot of sense for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Given the enormous success of The Odyssey, it’s only natural that this would quickly translate to an increased interest in Ancient Greece. And Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is right there, tailor-made for those who want to dive back into this world. It would definitely be interesting to see how many of the players jumping into the game in 2026 are new or returning.

It’s win after win for the Assassin’s Creed franchise at the moment. As well as the surging player count for Odyssey, the recently released Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has surpassed numerous big sales milestones, proving that interest in the franchise is alive and well. The next mainline release is expected to be Assassin’s Creed Hexe, of which very little is known at this point in time.
