Resident Evil 4 Remake: Rank Requirements & Rewards Explained

In the Resident Evil 4 remake, the ranking system measures player performance based on playtime and save data. The faster you complete the game, the higher your rank.

The metrics work differently in the Resident Evil 4 remake’s Mercenaries, where you fight waves of enemies. In this mode, your rank is determined by total kills and combos, ranging from A and B to S, S+, and S++.

RE4 Remake: Separate Ways Rank Requirements (& Rewards)

What does it take to get an S or S+ rank in the Resident Evil 4 Remake’s first DLC, Separate Ways? This guide will help players find out.

Updated on May 16, 2026, by Mohsen Baqery: As Resident Evil 4 players continue tackling its challenges and unlocking secret rewards, we decided to revisit this guide and improve it further. As a result, we reworked most sections to help players find what they need faster and added several new ones, including a breakdown of Resident Evil 4’s save limitations for certain ranks. We also added plenty of new images!

*NG stands for New Game. It means the rank cannot be earned in New Game Plus (NG+), where you carry over weapons and can use special guns.

**On Professional difficulty, earning an S+ rank also requires limiting yourself to 15 manual saves in total.

Rank requirements vary by the difficulty of the game. For example, on Assisted difficulty, completing the Resident Evil 4 remake in under four hours gives you an S rank. However, to get an S+ rank, you must complete the campaign in under four hours on a New Game with no special weapons.

All Save Limitations in Rank, Explained

In the Resident Evil 4 remake, Professional difficulty includes a save limit for earning an S+ rank. This restriction applies to both the main campaign and the Separate Ways DLC. It means you cannot use typewriters to save more than a set number of times. In the main game, the limit is 15 saves. In the DLC, it is reduced to 10 saves.

There is no save limit for earning other ranks.

How to Check Rank Requirements in RE4 Remake

  1. Pause the game or head to the main menu
  2. Open the “Results” tab
  3. Press the X button on Xbox (Square on the PlayStation)
  4. See the requirements in the table that pops up

If a rank has a requirement saying “Playthrough: 1,” it means that you have to be on a new save.

Mercenaries Rank Requirements

With the 1.04 update came a new DLC that added the Mercenaries’ mode to the Resident Evil 4 remake. This mode lets the player try to survive hordes of enemies and get ranked by the number of kills and combos they get. Unlike the campaign, the playtime has less of an impact on the Mercenaries ranking system and is mainly determined by “enemies killed” and “highest combo” scores.

The following table shows the Mercenaries’ ranking requirements.

It took me about three hours to get my first S+ rank in Mercenaries mode, but it was well worth the effort. Don’t give up!

With the addition of the Separate Ways DLC to Resident Evil 4, the Mercenaries mode got four new rank rewards. Here’s what players will earn by getting A, S, S+, and S++ ranks in this updated survival mode:

  • A rank with Leon unlocks Luis.
  • A rank with Luis unlocks Krauser.
  • A rank with Krauser grants H.U.N.K.
  • Completing any map with any rank using Ada unlocks Wesker.
  • S rank in all stages with Ada unlocks her Dressed version.
  • S rank in all stages with Leon unlocks his Pinstripe version.
