The Legend of Zelda Movie Gets New Release Date

The Legend of Zelda Movie Gets New Release Date

Following The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s big wins at the international box office, Nintendo is on a hot streak with their movies. The Legend of Zelda movie was announced in November 2023, when it was revealed that Nintendo would be working alongside Sony Pictures to bring the film to live. Unlike the Super Mario animated movies, The Legend of Zelda film is slated to be a live-action production, starring Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda.

In typical Zelda fashion, the live-action Legend of Zelda movie was originally scheduled to release on March 26, 2027, before being delayed until May 7, 2027. As of May 13, 2026, The Legend of Zelda movie has gotten yet another release date update. In a rare twist of fate, however, the Legend of Zelda movie will now be releasing earlier than its projected May, 2027 release date.

All New Legend of Zelda Game Rumors and Leaks Explained (May 2026)

Zelda’s big Switch 2 chapter is still unannounced, but one old legend and one strange codename have made the latest rumors hard to ignore.

The Legend of Zelda’s Release Date Has Been Moved From May 7, 2027 to Late April

The creator of The Legend of Zelda franchise, Shigeru Miyamoto took to X to announce the Zelda movie’s new release date. Thanks to the production team’s hard work, the movie’s release date has been pushed up on and The Legend of Zelda movie will now release on April 30, 2027 – one whole week earlier than its scheduled May release date.

The Legend of Zelda movie will be directed by Wes Ball, the director of the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, featuring a screenplay co-written by Derek Connolly (Pokémon Detective Pikachu) and T. S. Nowlin (Maze Runner trilogy). Ball previously described the Zelda movie as, “the next big mo-cap Avatar-like movie” and the film was shot in New Zealand, much like The Lord of the Rings trilogy. All signs pointing to the Zelda movie being Nintendo’s cinematic magnum opus when it releases next May.

Zelda Has a History of Delays

What makes The Legend of Zelda movie’s new release date particularly interesting is just how much of a history the series has for delays. The movie being delayed a second time would be par for the course, but being pushed up is another story entirely. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was originally scheduled to release in 1997 before being pushed into 1998. Twilight Princess was set to be released in 2005 for the Nintendo GameCube, before getting a Nintendo Wii makeover that pushed the game into 2006.

A rumored 2D Zelda game could launch in 2026 and revolve around Ganondorf

New Zelda Game With Surprise Protagonist Leaked for 2027 (& It’s Not the Ocarina of Time Remake)

A leaker claims there’s a new Legend of Zelda game in the works apart from the rumored Ocarina of Time remake, and it could come out in 2027.

Skyward Sword was going to release in 2010 originally, but was then pushed to 2011, releasing at the end of the Nintendo Wii’s life cycle instead. Breath of the Wild suffered multiple delays, after being planned for a 2015 release only to come out in March 2017. Tears of the Kingdom was also delayed for an entire year after development was completed, just so Nintendo could refine the game’s quality even. The fact the Zelda movie has been pushed up a whole week is a sign that Nintendo is very confident in their live-action adaptation of the series.

The Legend of Zelda movie releases in theaters on April 30, 2027.
