Xbox Offers Advice Regarding Mixtape Controversy

Xbox Offers Advice Regarding Mixtape Controversy

Mixtape is the newest title from publisher Annapurna Interactive, and Xbox has spoken up amidst the recent controversy that has been surrounding the game. While Mixtape isn’t an Xbox exclusive, the company is the first to offer advice to gamers in light of the discourse that the music-filled title has ignited.

Newcomer Mixtape is a game from Annapurna Interactive that follows a trio of teenagers as they reminisce and cause chaos one last time in their sleepy hometown to experience the ultimate party that will serve as a final lasting memory before going their separate ways. Its 90s setting also lends it to some great music from bands like The Smashing Pumpkins and Portishead. Annapurna Interactive games tend to utilize unorthodox mechanics, but Mixtape is one of the most recent games to be accused of being a walking simulator. The short length and simplistic gameplay have left some frustrated, and now, Xbox is speaking up.

The Mixtape soundtrack is filled with great songs that perfectly encapsulate a scene and you’ll want to relisten to after you’ve finished the story.

Xbox Offers a Reminder That Not Every Game Is One-Size-Fits-All

Xbox took to Twitter and posted a simple statement that says, “Reminder: just because you’re not personally into a game, doesn’t mean it’s a bad game.” Of course, this tweet doesn’t mention Mixtape outright, but the timing of the post coincides with the debate that has been surrounding the game. The nostalgia-heavy title is available for every major current platform, but Mixtape on Game Pass has potentially put the game in front of more players than other consoles, hence Xbox’s unexpected response.

Not surprisingly, Xbox’s tweet ignited even more discussion and debate about the game and its quality. While many agree with Xbox’s sentiment, others have doubled down on their stance that Mixtape isn’t actually a game, but a walking simulator. Mixtape is far from the only critically acclaimed game to be labeled as such. Games like Death Stranding, Firewatch, What Remains of Edith Finch, and The Stanley Parable are just a few of the story-driven titles from the past decade that have also been called walking simulators.

Ultimately, Mixtape puts the story first instead of focusing on any kind of intense gameplay, as the main mechanics of the game are dispersed between cutscenes. Each gameplay section is more like a mini-game that ties into a specific plot point. These moments don’t require much focus and are usually meant as ways to immerse players into the story even more, instead of being centered around success or failure. There have been plenty of games with great stories that also feature complex gameplay, but Mixtape is a more relaxing ride, and that has made it divisive in some circles. The game is also only three hours long on average, making whether it’s worth $20 highly subjective.

Even if Mixtape isn’t someone’s particular cup of tea, Xbox’s subtle comment on the situation is a reminder that not every game is made for every kind of gamer. Many games have specific audiences, and Mixtape happens to be one of those. Mixtape may not scratch an action-focused combat itch by any means, but it could be a solid choice for those who enjoy games that are about music, relaxing gameplay, and focus on storytelling over complex mechanics and progression.
